Common questions about Manaslu

Direct guidance from our Kathmandu expedition desk based on current operational realities.

What permits are required for the Manaslu Circuit trek?

Because Manaslu is a restricted border area, our team secures a Special Restricted Area Permit from the Department of Immigration, alongside the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP). Independent trekkers are not permitted, so our licensed guide handles all paperwork through a registered agency in Kathmandu.

What is the highest altitude reached on the Manaslu trek?

The highest point is the crossing of Larkya La pass at 5,106 metres. We spend several days ascending gradually past Deng and Namrung to ensure proper acclimatization before attempting the pass. Our lead guide carries an oximeter and a portable hyperbaric bag on every departure.

When is the best season to trek around Manaslu?

The reliable trekking windows are March to May in the spring and September to November in the autumn. During these months, skies are generally clear and precipitation is low, though afternoon wind at Larkya La can be brisk. Winter brings heavy snow that routinely blocks the pass.

How many days does the standard Manaslu Circuit trek take?

A standard itinerary requires 14 to 16 days of walking, covering roughly 177 kilometres from Soti Khola back to Besisahar or Dharapani. We schedule buffer days into our standard trips to account for weather delays or minor altitude sickness. Rushing this route significantly increases the risk of acute mountain sickness.

Are there teahouses along the Manaslu trail?

Yes, teahouse infrastructure has improved substantially over the last decade across the Budi Gandaki valley. You will find basic lodges offering twin-share rooms and standard dal bhat meals, though facilities become more rustic above Samagaun and Samdo. Our team contacts lodges ahead during peak season to secure sleeping space.

How physically demanding is the Manaslu trek?

This is a strenuous, remote trek recommended for hikers with previous high-altitude experience and strong cardiovascular endurance. You should expect daily walking durations of 5 to 7 hours over uneven stone staircases and suspension bridges. We advise beginning a focused leg-strengthening and cardio routine at least three months prior to departure.

Overview

About Manaslu

We guide expeditions around Manaslu, the eighth-highest mountain in the world at 8,163 meters. This remote trekking route takes us through deep river gorges and traditional Nubri and Tsum valley villages, where Tibetan Buddhist culture remains deeply preserved. Because this trail is classified as a restricted area, we handle all necessary special permits and ensure licensed guides accompany every trekking party to comply with local regulations.

The journey culminates in the demanding crossing of Larkya La pass at 5,106 meters, which requires careful acclimatization and robust physical preparation. From this high vantage point, we take in sweeping vistas of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and the Annapurna range. We operate these technical treks primarily during the stable weather windows of autumn from September to November and spring from March to May, when mountain visibility is most reliable.
