Trip overview
We guide this 14-day journey through the restricted corridors of the Manaslu region, looping beneath the eighth highest mountain in the world, Mount Manaslu (8163 m). Our route follows the Budi Gandaki river upstream before climbing into high alpine settlements influenced heavily by Tibetan culture and historical trade routes. Unlike more crowded trails in central Nepal, this circuit requires a registered guide and special permits, keeping the foot traffic lower and the trail environment rugged.
This trek suits experienced hikers comfortable with consecutive long days on rough stone staircases and scree. We encounter varied terrain ranging from sub-tropical river gorges dense with bamboo and cascading waterfalls up to barren tundra and glacial moraines near the high pass. The physical demands are significant, particularly during the pre-dawn ascent to Larkya La at 5106 m, where thin air and low temperatures test our endurance.
Throughout the expedition, we stay in local teahouses run by indigenous Nubri and Tsum communities. Our days blend physical challenge with cultural immersion as we pass centuries-old monasteries, mani walls, and flat-roofed stone houses. By managing our ascent carefully, we ensure proper acclimatisation before attempting the crossing into the Annapurna drainage.

Good to know
Altitude & acclimatisation
We incorporate structured rest days in Sama Gaun and Samdo to let our bodies adjust before crossing Larkya La at 5106 m. Our guides monitor everyone daily for early symptoms of acute mountain sickness and carry a pulse oximeter.
Teahouse accommodation
We stay in family-run lodges along the route which offer basic twin-share rooms with wooden beds and foam mattresses. Dining rooms are heated by central yak-dung or wood stoves, while washing and toilet facilities become increasingly rustic at higher elevations.
Permit requirements
Because this route passes through restricted zones and conservation areas, we handle all paperwork including the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit, ACAP, and local rural municipality fees prior to departure.
Physical preparation
This is a strenuous trek involving long days of ascending and descending on uneven stone steps. We recommend building cardiovascular endurance and leg strength through regular hiking or stair training several months before your trip.
