At a glance

Trip overview

Our Upper Mustang Trek with Luri Gompa is a 15-day expedition into the rainshadow of the Himalayas, traversing the arid gorges and wind-scoured plateaus of Nepal's former forbidden kingdom. Until the late 20th century, this territory operated as a distinct Tibetan-influenced monarchy, preserving centuries-old traditions, cliff dwellings, and Vajrayana Buddhist practices largely untouched by modern development. We follow ancient salt-trade routes along the Kali Gandaki riverbed, climbing through stark canyons before reaching the walled city of Lo Manthang.

This itinerary suits experienced trekkers comfortable with high-altitude walking, dry conditions, and remote teahouse accommodation. We encounter sweeping vistas of Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Damodar Himal, while navigating dusty tracks and high passes such as Gyu La at 4,077 m. Cultural immersion forms the core of our route, with dedicated days to examine cave art, monastic complexes, and traditional Thakali and Loba settlements.

We maintain a steady pace to address the physiological demands of altitude, peaking at Lo Manthang and surrounding valleys at approximately 3,610 m. Because Upper Mustang falls under a restricted area conservation framework, our team manages all specialized permits, logistics, and licensed guide requirements mandated by the Department of Immigration.
