Trip overview
We lead this 17-day expedition into the remote trans-Himalayan region of Upper Mustang, culminating in the historic walled city of Lo Manthang for the annual Tiji Festival. This journey takes us deep into the former Kingdom of Lo, where Tibetan Buddhist culture remains preserved in ancient monasteries, multi-story sky caves, and stone-built villages.
The route follows the Kali Gandaki valley through arid desert terrain flanked by Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna massif. Walking conditions involve daily hikes of 5 to 7 hours across exposed ridges and dry mountain passes reaching an altitude of 4200 m. While the technical difficulty is moderate, the elevation and dry winds require steady pacing and proper hydration.
We structure our itinerary around the spring celebration when monks perform sacred masked dances commemorating the victory of good over evil. Throughout the trek, we stay in local teahouses, sample regional Thakali and Tibetan fare, and navigate the trail with our experienced local guides and porters.
