At a glance

Trip overview

Our 13-day Upper Mustang Overland Tour offers a comfortable yet remote alternative to traditional trekking, utilising sturdy 4WD vehicles to navigate the arid landscapes of the former Kingdom of Lo. We take travellers deep into the rain-shadow of the Himalayas, where deep canyons, eroded red cliffs, and ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture dominate the terrain. This route follows the Kali Gandaki River valley north from Jomsom through Kagbeni, crossing high desert passes and entering restricted territory designed to preserve centuries-old traditions.

This journey suits travellers who wish to experience high-altitude Himalayan culture, walled settlements, and ancient cave systems without enduring weeks of strenuous daily walking. While our days involve mostly vehicle-based travel over rough dirt roads, we incorporate short walks and exploration hikes ranging from 10 km to 15 km to reach hidden sites such as the Luri Cave, Ghar Gompa, and the multi-tiered cave dwellings of Chhoser. Altitudes on this tour reach up to 4,000 m at Chhoser, requiring sensible pacing and hydration.

We stay in local family-run guesthouses and regional hotels, enjoying simple, hearty meals prepared by our hosts. Throughout the trip, our experienced guides share insights into the Loba, Thakali, and Gurung communities who call these wind-swept valleys home. From the lakes of Pokhara to the royal palace in Lo Manthang, our itinerary provides a grounded, culturally rich exploration of Nepal's most isolated northern frontier.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

Our tour reaches a maximum elevation of 4,000 m at the Chhoser caves, with overnight stays occurring up to 3,840 m in Lo Manthang. Because we travel largely by vehicle rather than gaining altitude gradually on foot, we maintain a steady pace, encourage adequate fluid intake, and monitor all travellers for early symptoms of acute mountain sickness.

Transport & road conditions

Roads throughout the Upper Mustang region are unpaved, dusty, and rugged. We utilise dependable 4WD vehicles driven by experienced local professionals who know how to navigate river crossings, steep gradients, and loose gravel tracks safely.

Accommodation on tour

Lodging on the tour consists of standard 3-star hotels in Kathmandu and Pokhara, and basic local teahouses or guesthouses once inside the Mustang region. Rooms are generally twin-share with simple wooden beds, foam mattresses, and shared bathroom facilities in remote areas.

Cultural etiquette

Upper Mustang preserves a deeply traditional Tibetan Buddhist way of life. We ask all travellers to respect local customs by walking clockwise around mani walls and chortens, asking permission before photographing residents, and removing shoes before entering monastery prayer halls.
