Trip overview
The Upper Dolpo Trek takes our teams deep into one of Nepalβs most remote and isolated Himalayan regions, situated near the Tibetan border. This expedition combines demanding high-altitude terrain, ancient Buddhist and Bon monasteries, and traditional settlements where daily life has changed very little over centuries. The route is designed for experienced mountaineers and trekkers who are comfortable with extended wilderness camping and rigorous daily ascents.
Our journey begins with domestic flights from Kathmandu through Nepalgunj to Juphal. From there, we follow the Phoksundo River upstream through pine forests and small farming hamlets before reaching the striking turquoise waters of Shey Phoksundo Lake. After an acclimatisation day at Ringmo, we cross strenuous high-altitude pathways including the Kang La Pass at 5,375 metres to reach the historic Shey Gompa and the sacred Crystal Mountain.
Continuing across the remote high plateaus of Dolpo, we navigate the Shey La and Jeng La passes while visiting isolated villages such as Namgung, Saldang, and Dho Tarap. The return route follows the Tarap Khola downstream before descending back to Dunai and Juphal for our return flight to Kathmandu. Throughout the expedition, we operate fully supported camping arrangements, relying on our experienced cooks, Sherpas, and porters.
Physical preparation is essential for this trek. Daily walking distances are often long, and we cross multiple passes exceeding 5,000 metres where temperatures drop sharply at night. Trekkers must possess strong cardiovascular endurance, steady balance on scree trails, and a resilient mindset for remote conditions.

Before you go
Good to know
Altitude & acclimatisation
Upper Dolpo requires crossing multiple passes above 5,000 metres, making proper acclimatisation essential. We build scheduled rest days into our itinerary at Shey Phoksundo Lake and Shey Gompa to help your body adjust safely to the thinning air.
Our lead guides monitor every participant daily for early symptoms of acute mountain sickness. Carrying a comprehensive medical kit and maintaining a steady pace are standard protocols on all our remote expeditions.
Physical fitness requirements
This is a strenuous expedition involving daily walking durations of 5 to 8 hours across rough mountain terrain. Prior multi-day trekking experience at high altitude is mandatory before joining this team.
We recommend training with weighted pack walks, cardiovascular exercises, and leg-strengthening routines several months prior to departure to ensure you can comfortably handle consecutive high-pass days.
Camping logistics & meals
Because teahouses are absent or extremely basic in Upper Dolpo, we operate a fully supported tented camp. Our expert kitchen crew prepares three hot meals daily in a dedicated mess tent.
We provide all sleeping tents, dining tables, chairs, and boiled safe drinking water throughout the trek. Porters and pack animals carry all group and personal equipment.
Permits & regulations
Upper Dolpo is designated as a restricted trekking area by the government of Nepal. Independent travel is strictly prohibited, and all visitors must be accompanied by a government-licensed guide registered with an authorized agency.
Our office processes all necessary restricted area permits, national park entry fees, and TIMS paperwork in advance. Trekkers must carry valid passport identification and sufficient cash for personal expenses along the route.
