At a glance

Trip overview

Our twenty-five-day Upper Dolpo trek takes our team deep into the remote rain-shadow valleys of northwestern Nepal. This expedition follows ancient salt-trade routes through high, barren terrain, isolated hamlets, and high mountain passes exceeding 5,000 m. We operate this journey with a fully supported team of guides, cooks, and porters, utilizing both local teahouses and tented camps.

This route suits experienced trekkers who are comfortable with remote wilderness travel, cold nights, and long daily walking hours on rough mountain trails. We traverse a landscape shaped by both Tibetan Buddhism and the ancient Bon culture, visiting isolated settlements such as Saldang, Dho Tarap, and the famous Crystal Monastery at Shey Gompa.

Physical demands are high due to sustained altitudes, consecutive pass crossings including Kang-La (5,360 m) and Jeng-La (5,090 m), and the sheer remoteness of the Karnali region. Our itinerary incorporates acclimatisation days at Phoksundo Lake and Shey Gompa to ensure safe progression through this high-altitude terrain.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

Upper Dolpo is a high-altitude wilderness trek where we cross multiple passes above 5,000 m, including Kang-La (5,360 m) and Jeng-La (5,090 m). Our itinerary includes dedicated acclimatisation days at Phoksundo Lake and Shey Gompa to mitigate the risks of acute mountain sickness.

Best time to trek

The optimal seasons for Upper Dolpo are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), offering clear skies and stable weather. Because Dolpo lies in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri range, it remains relatively dry even during the summer monsoon months.

Permits & regulations

Upper Dolpo is a restricted trekking region requiring special permits issued by the Department of Immigration alongside Shey Phoksundo National Park entry permits. Our office handles all paperwork, and solo trekkers are not permitted by government regulations.

Logistics & flights

Mountain flights to and from Jhupal are weather-dependent and subject to delays or cancellations. We always build contingency days into our schedule and recommend padding your international travel dates accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a special restricted area permit required for Upper Dolpo?

Upper Dolpo shares a border with Tibet and is classified as a controlled restricted area to protect fragile local ecosystems, traditional cultures, and remote communities. Independent trekkers are not allowed, and all visitors must travel with a registered agency and licensed guide.

What kind of accommodation should I expect on the Upper Dolpo trek?

We use standard hotels in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj. On the trek itself, accommodation alternates between basic local teahouses and fully supported tented camping set up by our expedition crew.

How physically demanding is the Upper Dolpo Trek?

This is a strenuous wilderness trek rated for experienced hikers. You should be prepared for 5 to 7 hours of walking daily over rugged terrain, with multiple high pass crossings above 5,000 m.

What happens if our flight from Jhupal is delayed due to weather?

Mountain weather in Dolpo can frequently disrupt STOL flights at Jhupal airstrip. We include contingency buffer days in our schedule, but we advise travelers to maintain flexibility with their international departures.

Do I need travel insurance for this trek?

Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance that explicitly covers emergency helicopter evacuation up to 6,000 m and high-altitude medical treatment is mandatory for all participants.

What is the food like during the camping and teahouse portions?

Our accompanying kitchen crew prepares fresh, hygienic meals including dal bhat, noodles, soups, and basic western dishes. In lower villages, we may occasionally supplement meals at local teahouses.
