We guide you across Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan in a 16-day overland and air journey through historic capitals, ancient monasteries, and high Himalayan valleys.

At a glance

Trip overview

Our sixteen-day itinerary connects the distinct cultural and geographic zones of Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan. We begin in the Kathmandu Valley, navigating the medieval squares built by the Malla Kings, the Hindu shrines of Pashupatinath, and the Buddhist stupa at Boudhanath, before taking in valley views from the hill station of Nagarkot and the lakeside town of Pokhara.

From Nepal, we fly across the Himalayan range to Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region at 3650 m. Here, our team leads you through the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Drepung Monastery, allowing ample time for altitude acclimatisation in the high-altitude desert air. We then return via Kathmandu to catch a mountain flight into Paro International Airport in Bhutan.

In Bhutan, we spend our days driving through forested valleys between Thimphu and Paro, exploring traditional dzongs, the Folk Heritage Museum, and hiking up to Taktsang Monastery, known locally as Tiger's Nest. This tour suits travellers interested in Himalayan Buddhism, architecture, and regional history who prefer comfortable hotel stays over camping.

While this is a cultural tour rather than a high-altitude trek, we do reach significant elevations in Lhasa and undertake day hikes in Bhutan. A baseline level of cardiovascular fitness is required to comfortably manage the daily walking tours and stair climbs at high altitude.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude considerations

This itinerary reaches a maximum elevation of 3650 m in Lhasa. While we travel mostly by vehicle and stay in comfortable hotels, the sudden change in altitude can cause mild symptoms.

We recommend staying well-hydrated, moving at a moderate pace, and allowing our guide to monitor your physical condition during your time in Tibet.

Fitness expectations

Although this is primarily a cultural tour rather than a wilderness trek, it involves substantial walking on uneven stone steps, unpaved pathways, and city streets.

The hike to Tiger's Nest in Bhutan requires ascending steep inclines at altitude, so a regular routine of cardiovascular exercise prior to departure is advised.

Visa and permit logistics

Travelling through Nepal, Tibet, and Bhutan requires multiple visas and regional permits, which our office manages on your behalf using your passport details.

You must ensure your passport has at least six months of validity remaining and carry several passport-sized photographs for permit processing upon arrival.

Accommodation standards

Throughout the tour in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Nagarkot, and Lhasa, we arrange accommodation in 3-star category hotels on a twin-share basis with daily breakfast.

In Bhutan, accommodation and full-board meals are provided in standard tourist-grade hotels as regulated by local tourism policies.
