We guide an eight-day white water rafting expedition down the Sun Koshi River, navigating continuous Class III to V rapids through remote gorges.

At a glance

Trip overview

We lead an intensive eight-day white water rafting expedition along the Sun Koshi River, known locally as the river of gold. Originating from snowmelt in the high Himalayas, the river cuts through deep gorges, lush valleys, and isolated settlements before joining the Ganges basin. This journey suits experienced paddlers and strong swimmers seeking prolonged river isolation, technical rapid negotiation, and wilderness camping on sandy riverbanks.

Throughout the expedition, our professional river guides and safety kayakers manage continuous technical challenges, including renowned rapids such as Meat Grinder, High Anxiety, Jaws, and Big Dipper. The water volume and gradient shift constantly, alternating between tranquil floating sections and turbulent Class IV and V hydraulics that require precise teamwork and boat control.

Logistically, our expedition begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Dolalghat for our initial safety briefings and gear checks. We spend our nights in tented camps set up by our crew on remote river beaches. The journey concludes near Chatra, followed by a transfer to Biratnagar airport for our return flight to Kathmandu.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Drive to Dolalghat and Initial Rafting

Meals: B

Early in the morning, our team drives from Kathmandu to Dolalghat, our river put-in point. After lunch by the water, our lead instructors conduct safety briefings and cover essential commands and rescue protocols. We then launch our rafts for initial practice sessions before tackling our first rapid, a Class IV section known as Rotten Cave. We pitch our tents on the riverbank for the night.

Day 2

Meat Grinder Rapid to Tama Koshi Confluence

Meals: B / L / D

After breakfast, we pack our gear and prepare for a demanding morning on the water. We run the Class IV+ Meat Grinder rapid, navigating precise lines to avoid turbulent holes. Continuing downstream, we reach the confluence where the Sun Koshi meets the Tama Koshi, marked by a riverside Shiva temple. We set up our evening camp nearby.

Day 3

Pre Anxiety and High Anxiety Rapids

Meals: B / L / D

Our route takes us past the Likhu Khola confluence into a sequence of technical white water. We encounter a short Class III+ rapid followed immediately by the extended Class IV challenges of Pre Anxiety and High Anxiety. Our guides steer through the heavy currents before we pull ashore to establish our tented camp.

Day 4

Harkapur Rapids

Meals: B / L / D

Today presents some of the heaviest white water of the expedition. Following several Class III+ warm-up sections, we stop to scout the complex Harkapur II and III rapids. Our team applies careful reading and precise maneuvering to negotiate these powerful drops before camping further down the valley.

Day 5

Dudh Koshi Confluence and Jaws

Meals: B / L / D

We resume our descent as the Dudh Koshi river enters from the left, significantly increasing the volume of the Sun Koshi. The river widens into broader channels interspersed with smaller drops, culminating in the turbulent water of the Jaws rapid. We spend the night at a remote riverside camp.

Day 6

Jungle Corridor and Waterfalls

Meals: B / L / D

This leg tests our crew through sustained Class IV+ rapids including Rhino Rock and the narrow Jungle Corridor. Vertical waterfalls cascade down the steep canyon walls on both sides as we paddle through the gorge. We make camp on a sandbar for the evening.

Day 7

Maneuvering Practice and River Remoteness

Meals: B / L / D

As our expedition nears its final stretches, we dedicate time for participants to handle kayaks and practice advanced boat maneuvering under the supervision of our safety kayakers. We enjoy a steady flow through quieter valley sections before setting up our final wilderness camp.

Day 8

Big Dipper Rapids and Return to Kathmandu

Meals: B

Our final morning on the water brings us through the powerful Class IV waves of the Big Dipper rapid. We float past the point where the Arun and Tamor rivers join to form the Saptakoshi. At approximately fourteen hundred hours, we conclude our river journey, drive to Biratnagar airport, and board our flight back to Kathmandu.

Good to know

Swimming and Fitness Requirements

Participants must be confident swimmers comfortable in turbulent, cold water. Previous rafting experience is helpful given the continuous Class III to V nature of the Sun Koshi, and a solid level of general physical fitness is required to endure multiple days of active paddling.

Safety and Equipment

Our expeditions are accompanied by professional safety kayakers and experienced river guides equipped with throw bags, first aid kits, and comprehensive repair gear. Every participant wears a high-floatation personal flotation device and a helmet at all times on the water.

Camping and Logistics

All nights on the river are spent in multi-person tents set up on sandy beaches. Our support crew manages camp kitchens and meal preparation. Drinking water is treated and filtered daily by our staff.

Best Season

We run the Sun Koshi expedition primarily during the spring window from March to May and the autumn period from September to December, when water levels and weather conditions remain stable.
