We traverse the arid rain shadow of the Kali Gandaki valley on this 11-day trek to the walled kingdom of Lo Manthang.

At a glance

Trip overview

We lead this 11-day expedition into the restricted trans-Himalayan kingdom of Upper Mustang, following ancient trade routes along the Kali Gandaki River. The landscape here sits in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, creating an arid desert environment of eroded cliffs, canyon lands, and stark plateaus that stands in sharp contrast to the lush green hills of southern Nepal.

This itinerary suits experienced walkers who are comfortable with consecutive days of physical exertion across rugged terrain. While the maximum elevation of 3,810 m at Drakmar is lower than peaks in the Everest region, the daily distance, constant exposure to strong winds, and arid conditions require solid cardiovascular fitness and proper pacing.

Culturally, Upper Mustang feels closer to western Tibet than mainstream Nepal. The villages are populated primarily by Lo people who preserve ancient Tibetan Buddhist traditions, stone-walled houses, and centuries-old monasteries adorned with murals and prayer wheels.
