At a glance

Trip overview

Our fourteen-day journey combines cultural immersion with high-altitude trekking as we travel from Kathmandu into the Tibetan Autonomous Region for the Saga Dawa Festival. Timed to coincide with the full moon of the fourth lunar month, this expedition brings us to Tarboche at the foot of Mount Kailash to witness the raising of the sacred flagpole and observe pilgrims performing their devotional circuits.

Following the festival events, we undertake the traditional three-day Kailash Parikrama (Kora), trekking past Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk while crossing the high Dolma-la pass at 5,200 m. This route suits experienced travellers who are comfortable with strenuous daily exertion at high elevations and basic teahouse accommodations.

We manage logistics including border crossings, Tibet Tourism Bureau permits, and vehicle support to ensure a structured passage through remote terrain. Our experienced guides lead the group through high-altitude passes, Lake Mansarovar, and historic monasteries, offering deep insight into Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude management

Because much of this journey takes place above 4,000 m with a high point at 5,200 m on the Dolma-la pass, we build acclimatisation days into our schedule. Our guides monitor team members closely for symptoms of acute mountain sickness.

We carry portable oxygen cylinders during the Kailash Parikrama for emergency support. Staying well-hydrated and maintaining a steady pace are essential for success.

Accommodation standards

In Kathmandu, we provide 3-star hotel accommodations on a twin-share basis with breakfast. While traveling through Tibet and along the trek, we book the best available twin-sharing guesthouses and lodges.

Facilities in remote regions like Dirapuk and Zuthulpuk are basic, featuring shared amenities and multi-bed dormitory or simple lodge rooms without modern luxuries.

Physical fitness requirements

This is a strenuous itinerary that requires prior high-altitude hiking experience and robust cardiovascular fitness. Days on the trail can last up to 10 hours over rough terrain and steep high-altitude passes.

We recommend starting a structured cardio and leg-strengthening training program several months before your departure date.

Cultural etiquette

Tibetan Buddhism heavily influences the regions we visit, particularly during the Saga Dawa festival. We ask all travelers to respect local customs, walk clockwise around religious structures, and seek permission before photographing monks or sacred ceremonies.

Our guides will brief you on specific protocols for monasteries and festival grounds.
