We trace the roots of Buddhism across Kathmandu Valley and Lumbini through ancient stupas, monasteries, and meditation caves.

At a glance

Trip overview

Our ten-day Buddhist pilgrimage offers a sober and contemplative journey through the sacred heartlands of Nepal. We have designed this route for pilgrims, monks, and travelers who wish to experience Buddhism as a living tradition rather than a standard sightseeing tour. Our path moves deliberately from the ancient stupas of the Kathmandu Valley down to the sacred birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama in Lumbini, pausing at monasteries, meditation caves, and historic relic sites.

We spend our days walking around whitewashed domes, listening to morning chants, and sitting quietly in spaces shaped by centuries of Vajrayana, Mahayana, and Theravada practice. Our lead guides ensure that ample time is given at each stop for personal reflection, prayer, and circumambulation without the rush of commercial tourism.

This tour involves gentle walking, short drives between sites, and one domestic flight to the terai plains. While physical demands are low, the emotional and spiritual depth requires an open mind and a respectful attitude toward monastic customs. We stay in comfortable hotels along the way, allowing us to rest properly after long hours of contemplation in the monastery courtyards.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu – Introduction to Nepal’s Buddhist Heritage

Meals: B

Our team meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport upon your arrival and transfers you to your hotel in Kathmandu. We use the late afternoon for a quiet pilgrimage briefing to outline our route through the valley.

If time permits, we take a short stroll around the neighborhood to catch our first glimpse of local prayer flags and street-side shrines. We spend the evening resting after your international flight.

Day 2

Sacred Stupas of the Kathmandu Valley: Swayambhunath and Boudhanath

Meals: B / L / D

After breakfast, our pilgrimage begins at Swayambhunath Stupa, perched on a wooded hill overlooking the city. We join local devotees spinning prayer wheels and walking the stone steps.

Later in the day, we continue to Boudhanath Stupa, the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. We watch monks chanting inside the surrounding monasteries and light butter lamps as evening falls.

Day 3

Monastic Learning and Living Buddhism: Kopan and Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling

Meals: B / L / D

Following breakfast, we head up the hillside to Kopan Monastery to observe morning philosophy classes and monastic discipline. The calm atmosphere provides an ideal setting for silent reflection.

In the afternoon, we visit Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery to examine its intricate shrines and large meditation halls. We return to our hotel in the late afternoon.

Day 4

Namo Buddha – The Sacred Valley of Compassion

Meals: B / L / D

We depart Kathmandu after breakfast and drive through terraced farming hills toward Namo Buddha. This site marks the location where Prince Mahasattva offered his flesh to a starving tigress.

We spend time walking around the hilltop stupa and visiting the adjacent Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery. We return to Kathmandu by late afternoon for a quiet evening.

Day 5

Pharping – Sacred Vajrayana Meditation Sites

Meals: B / L / D

Our journey takes us south of Kathmandu valley to Pharping, an important pilgrimage hub connected to Guru Rinpoche. We hike up to the Asura Cave where ancient practitioners meditated.

We explore the surrounding shrines and meditation pockets before heading back to Kathmandu. The evening is kept free for journaling and personal rest.

Day 6

Fly to Lumbini – Entering the Birthplace of Lord Buddha

Meals: B / L / D

We take an early morning transfer to the domestic terminal for our flight to Bhairahawa, followed by a short road journey to Lumbini. Upon arrival, we check into our hotel and let the flat plains slow our pace.

We take a gentle walk near the outer perimeter of the Sacred Garden as the sun sets over the southern lowlands. We rest early in preparation for a full day of exploration.

Day 7

Lumbini Sacred Garden and International Monastic Zones

Meals: B / L / D

After breakfast, we enter the protected Sacred Garden to visit the Maya Devi Temple and the ancient Ashoka Pillar. We walk silently among the ruins where Siddhartha Gautama spent his infancy.

Later, we visit the international monastic zones, observing how different nations like Thailand, Myanmar, and China interpret Buddhist architecture. We return to our hotel for the evening.

Day 8

Kapilvastu and Ramagrama – Tracing the Buddha’s Early Life

Meals: B / L / D

We drive west after breakfast to Tilaurakot, the ancient palace site of the Shakya kingdom where the young prince lived before renouncing his crown. The brick foundations offer a sober look into early urban history.

We conclude the day at Ramagrama Stupa, an authentic and unopened relic mound preserved beneath ancient trees. We head back to Lumbini for the night.

Day 9

Return Flight to Kathmandu – Final Reflection

Meals: B / L / D

We board our morning flight from Bhairahawa back to Kathmandu, leaving the flat terai plains for the hills. The rest of the day is yours to revisit a favorite monastery or purchase prayer items.

We gather in the evening for a farewell dinner hosted by our team to review our journey. We prepare our bags for departure the following day.

Pacing & Physical Effort

This is a cultural tour rather than a high-altitude trek, requiring only light walking on stone steps, monastery courtyards, and garden paths. We maintain a slow, respectful pace suitable for all age groups.

Dress Code & Etiquette

We visit active religious sites where modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is mandatory. We always circumambulate stupas in a clockwise direction and remove shoes before entering prayer halls.

Weather Conditions

Kathmandu experiences moderate mountain weather, while Lumbini in the southern plains can be significantly warmer and humid. We recommend packing layers for cool mornings in the hills and lighter fabrics for the south.

Photography Rules

Photography is generally permitted outdoors around stupas and monasteries, but interior photography of sacred statues or monks in meditation is often restricted. Our guide will inform you when cameras must be put away.
