Trip overview
Our 12-day journey takes us to Rara Lake, Nepal's largest and deepest body of water, situated at an altitude of 2,990 m in the remote Mugu and Jumla districts of the far northwestern region. This trek is suited for experienced walkers who want to step away from the crowded trails of the Annapurna and Everest regions and explore the quiet pine and spruce forests of Rara National Park.
The route begins with a flight to Jumla, taking us through the historical Sinja Valley, the ancient cradle of the Malla Dynasty. We cross high ridges such as the Jaljala pass at 3,585 m, navigating old trade routes through rugged farming settlements populated by local Thakuri and Chettri communities. The terrain demands steady physical endurance and comfort with remote, basic lodge facilities.
We maintain a deliberate pace to allow for proper acclimatisation as we gain and lose elevation through dense woodland canopies of blue pine, oak, and Himalayan fir. Our team handles all logistics, permits, and local coordination so we can focus entirely on the trail and the pristine environments of far western Nepal.

Good to know
Altitude & Acclimatisation
This trek reaches a maximum elevation of 3,585 m at Jaljala pass. While this is lower than Everest or Annapurna base camp routes, the remote nature of far western Nepal means evacuation is complex. We maintain a steady ascent profile to ensure everyone adapts safely.
Fitness Expectations
Days involve 5 to 6 hours of walking over uneven terrain, stone steps, and forest tracks with daily elevation changes. Prior multi-day hiking experience with a daypack is strongly recommended.
Accommodation & Facilities
Lodges along the Rara route are simple and family-run compared to more commercialized trekking regions. Rooms are twin-share with basic wooden beds, and washing facilities are minimal.
Best Time to Trek
We run this trek primarily during the spring months of March to May when wildflowers bloom in the forests, and autumn from September to November when skies are clearest.
