Our twenty-day Everest Base Camp trek is designed with extra acclimatisation days and a slower pace to safely accommodate older hikers and children.

At a glance

Trip overview

We designed this twenty-day itinerary specifically to make the journey to Everest Base Camp accessible for multi-generational families, older adults, and children. By incorporating additional rest stops, shorter daily distances, and extra acclimatisation days at Dingboche and Thukla, our team reduces the physical strain typically associated with high-altitude trekking in the Khumbu region.

Our lead guides maintain a patient, steady pace along the ancient stone paths, suspension bridges, and pine forests that flank the Dudh Koshi River. We prioritise safety and comfort every step of the way, monitoring blood oxygen levels daily and providing reliable porter support so hikers only carry light daypacks.

This route balances physical challenge with cultural immersion, passing Sherpa villages, mani walls, and active monasteries such as Tengboche. While reaching Kala Patthar at 5,545 m and the foot of the Khumbu Icefall demands steady effort, our measured schedule allows hikers of varied age groups to achieve their mountain goals safely.

Meals: B / L / D

To help our bodies adapt to the altitude, we walk up to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880 m. This short three-hour excursion offers our first clear sightings of Lhotse and Ama Dablam before we return to Namche for the afternoon.

Day 6

Trek to Tengboche

Meals: B / L / D

The path contours above the valley before dropping sharply to the Dudh Koshi at Phunke Tenga. After a lunch break, we climb steadily through rhododendron forests to reach the famous monastery settlement of Tengboche at 3,860 m.

Day 7

Day 9

Trek to Thukla

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude management

We maintain a conservative ascent profile with two dedicated acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, plus shorter daily walking distances. Our guides carry pulse oximeters to monitor your blood oxygen saturation levels twice daily.

Teahouse accommodation

We book the best available twin-share lodge rooms along the route, with private bathrooms and hot showers included in lower elevation stops like Phakding and Namche. Higher up, facilities become more basic and shared.

Family-friendly support

Our ratio of porters and guides ensures that children and older adults receive individual attention. Porters carry heavy gear duffels so that family members only need to carry a lightweight daypack with water and layers.

Mountain weather

Conditions in the Khumbu change rapidly, with clear mornings often giving way to afternoon clouds or wind. We pack layers for sub-zero temperatures at night while enjoying pleasant warmth during daytime walks.

Frequently asked questions

Is this trek safe for children and senior citizens?

Yes, we designed this specific 20-day itinerary with shorter daily walking distances, extra rest days, and careful altitude monitoring to ensure safety for all ages.

What is the maximum altitude we will reach?

The highest point on this trek is Kala Patthar at 5,545 m, while Everest Base Camp itself sits at 5,364 m.

How do we manage the risk of altitude sickness?

Our itinerary includes two dedicated acclimatisation days and a very gradual ascent profile. Our guides also check blood oxygen levels daily with an oximeter.

What kind of accommodation is available on the trail?

We stay in mountain lodges run by local families. Rooms are twin-share with basic foam mattresses, and we include private bathrooms with hot showers where available.

How heavy are the packs we have to carry?

Porters carry your main duffel bag, so you only need to carry a small daypack containing your water, rain gear, warm layers, and personal valuables.

What happens if flights to Lukla are delayed?

Mountain weather can affect flights. We build contingency time into our schedule, and during peak seasons, flights often operate out of Ramechhap Airport to avoid congestion.
