Trip overview
We head deep into the rugged hills of far western Nepal on this comprehensive 16-day expedition to Rara Lake. Far removed from the crowded tea-house routes of the Annapurnas and Khumbu, this trail takes our team through deep coniferous forests, traditional Hindu farming villages, and historic sites tied to the medieval Malla kings. It suits experienced trekkers looking for genuine solitude, raw wilderness, and a rigorous off-the-beaten-path itinerary.
The route begins with a flight to Nepalgunj and onward to Jumla, before we climb steadily through birch and pine woods across high ridges such as Ghurchi Mara at 3710 m. We descend into the broad, fertile basin of the Sinja Valley—once the capital of the Khasa Malla kingdom—where stone tablets and ancient temples line our path. Entering Rara National Park, we encounter protected wildlife including musk deer, leopards, and the colorful Danfe pheasant, before reaching the shores of Nepal's largest alpine lake at 3062 m.
This trek demands sound physical fitness and resilience. We camp under canvas for much of the journey, supported by our experienced cooking and guiding crew. While the daily ascents over high passes and stony tracks are physically demanding, the reward is an unadulterated encounter with a corner of the Himalaya few travelers ever reach.

Physical Fitness
This trek requires a high level of cardiovascular endurance and previous multi-day hiking experience. Our route involves daily walking times of five to seven hours, frequent steep ascents and descents on rocky trails, and crossing multiple high passes above 3400 m.
Remote Infrastructure
Far western Nepal lacks the developed tea-house infrastructure found in regions like the Everest or Annapurna trails. We operate this trip fully supported with tents, dining facilities, and an expert kitchen crew traveling alongside us.
Weather and Climate
Mountain weather in western Nepal can change rapidly, with warm daytime temperatures offset by freezing nights once we gain altitude. Trekkers must pack adequate thermal layers and waterproof outer shells to stay comfortable through changing conditions.
Permit Requirements
Because Rara Lake lies within a restricted zone and a protected national park, specific special permits and national park entry fees are mandatory. Our office handles all paperwork and fee submissions prior to departure.
