At a glance

Trip overview

Our Mohare Danda Trek follows a quieter community-managed trail through the southern foothills of the Annapurna range. Designed as a sustainable alternative to the busier routes nearby, this six-day itinerary leads us through terraced hillsides, dense rhododendron forests, and traditional Magar villages including Nangi, Khibang, and Tikot. By staying in community-run lodges and homestays, we directly support local rural development while experiencing authentic daily life away from major tourist hubs.

The route suits trekkers seeking a moderate walking holiday with cultural depth rather than extreme high-altitude mountaineering. Our daily stages involve steady climbs on stone staircases and forest tracks, culminating on the third day at the open ridge of Mohare Danda at 3,310 m. From this vantage point, we obtain panoramic perspectives across the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massifs without the congestion found on adjacent ridges.

Accommodation throughout the journey consists of basic community lodges and homestays operated by local families. Meals are simple, featuring locally grown organic produce and staple dal bhat prepared in communal kitchens. While the physical demands are moderate, proper footwear and conditioning for consecutive days of uphill and downhill walking remain essential for a safe traverse.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Drive to Galeshwor and trek to Banskharka

Meals: B

Leaving Pokhara by road, we travel west past rural farm settlements alongside the Kali Gandaki River until we reach Galeshwor at 1,170 m. After a brief rest, we begin our climb on stone steps rising above the river valley. The path ascends steadily through agricultural terraces for two to three hours before arriving at the small hillside settlement of Banskharka at 1,526 m, where we spend the night in a community homestay.

Day 2

Trek from Banskharka to Nangi

Meals: B / L / D

Today our route continues upward through wooded slopes and scattered farm clearings. We navigate a mix of gradual ascents and forested paths for six to seven hours, taking in early perspectives of the surrounding hills. We reach the large Magar village of Nangi at 2,320 m by afternoon, a settlement known for its local school and community forestry projects.

Day 3

Trek from Nangi to Mohare Danda

Meals: B / L / D

Our trail today leads us steadily higher through dense ridge forests. We maintain a measured pace on the steep uphill sections, emerging above the treeline onto the open expanse of Mohare Danda at 3,310 m. From this high camp, we look out directly toward the high snow peaks of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.

Day 4

Trek from Mohare Danda to Khibang

Meals: B / L / D

We begin our descent from the ridge, following the trail downward through shaded hillsides and terraced fields. The walk takes approximately six to seven hours as we drop in elevation toward another traditional settlement. We settle for the evening in the village of Khibang at 2,060 m.

Day 5

Trek from Khibang to Tikot

Meals: B / L / D

A shorter walking day of four to five hours leads us across undulating terrain and local farm tracks. We arrive at Tikot at 2,210 m by midday, leaving time to explore the stone-paved alleys and interact with the local residents of this traditional Magar village.

Day 6

Trek to Tiplyang and drive to Pokhara

Meals: B

Our final morning involves a three-hour descent down to the valley floor, reaching the roadside settlement of Tiplyang at 1,030 m on the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. Here our vehicle awaits to drive us back to Pokhara, concluding our trek.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

Our highest point on this trek is Mohare Danda at 3,310 m. While this elevation is moderate compared to higher Himalayan passes, we still ascend gradually to allow our bodies to adjust naturally. Staying hydrated and maintaining a steady pace remain essential.

Accommodation standards

This is a community eco-trek where luxury amenities are absent. We stay in simple village homestays and community lodges run by local families, offering twin-share rooms with basic bedding and shared facilities.

Meals & water

Fresh dal bhat, local vegetables, and seasonal fruits form the core of our daily menu in the lodges. We recommend carrying water purification tablets or a filter, as bottled water creates unnecessary plastic waste in these remote villages.

Fitness expectations

While classified as an easier route, the trek involves sustained uphill stair climbing on day one and continuous downhill walking on subsequent days. Good knee health and basic cardiovascular conditioning are necessary for daily walks of five to seven hours.
