At a glance

Trip overview

Our 17-day expedition blends the physical ascent to Everest Base Camp at 5,364 m with participation in the Mani Rimdu festival at Tengboche Monastery. We follow the historic Khumbu Valley route used by Tenzing and Hillary, tracing the Dudh Koshi River through Sagarmatha National Park. The trail demands respect for altitude as we cross suspension bridges, pass through pine and rhododendron forests, and navigate rocky moraines.

This itinerary is structured for experienced hikers who want more than a standard mountain walk. By timing our arrival in Tengboche to coincide with the annual gatherings of monks, we witness masked dances, prayers, and intricate sand mandalas. We spend our nights in family-run teahouses, relying on local Sherpa hospitality while acclimatising progressively at Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and higher elevations.

We maintain a deliberate pace to manage the physiological challenges of high altitude. Our lead guides manage daily health checks, monitor weather patterns, and share their deep knowledge of Sherpa culture and Buddhist traditions. From the vantage point of Kala Patthar at 5,545 m to the glacial expanse of the Khumbu Icefall, this journey provides a thorough engagement with the Everest region.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & Acclimatisation

We ascend past 3,000 m on Day 4 and reach a maximum altitude of 5,545 m at Kala Patthar. Our itinerary includes designated acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche to reduce the risk of acute mountain sickness.

Our guides carry pulse oximeters to monitor oxygen saturation levels daily. If any member of our team shows signs of severe altitude sickness, our leaders are trained to manage immediate descent protocols.

Best Time to Trek

We schedule this trek specifically for October and November to align with the Mani Rimdu festival dates at Tengboche Monastery and secure stable post-monsoon weather patterns.

Daytime temperatures at lower elevations remain pleasant, but nighttime temperatures above 4,000 m drop well below freezing. Packing proper thermal layers is essential.

Teahouse Accommodation

We house you in local twin-share lodges operated by Sherpa families along the trail. Facilities are basic, featuring wooden beds with foam mattresses and communal dining halls heated by yak dung or wood stoves.

Hot showers, device charging, and Wi-Fi are generally available for a small extra fee set by the lodge owners, though availability decreases at higher altitudes.

Physical Preparation

This is a strenuous trek involving up to eight hours of walking on steep, rocky terrain carrying a daypack. We advise starting cardiovascular and leg-strengthening training several months prior to departure.

Previous multi-day hiking experience in mountainous terrain is strongly recommended before attempting this route.

The highest point on this itinerary is Kala Patthar at 5,545 m, which we summit on Day 12. Everest Base Camp sits slightly lower at 5,364 m.
