At a glance
Trip overview
We run this five-day trek through the arid landscapes of the Lower Mustang region, following the course of the Kali Gandaki River. This route suits hikers looking for a moderate Himalayan experience that combines high desert terrain with deep religious traditions shared by both Hindus and Buddhists.
Our route departs from Jomsom at 2,715 m, tracking north through Kagbeni before climbing steadily to the pilgrimage destination of Muktinath at 3,850 m. Along the way, we walk past fossil beds, encounter Thakali and Tibetan-origin communities, and travel beneath the towering peaks of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri.
While the maximum altitude of 3,850 m is lower than major base camp treks, we maintain a deliberate pace to let our team adjust safely. Weather in the Kali Gandaki corridor is known for strong afternoon winds, requiring early starts each morning on the trail.

Altitude considerations
We reach a maximum altitude of 3,850 m at Muktinath on this trek. While lower than many Himalayan passes, the rapid change in elevation requires careful attention to hydration and a steady walking pace.
Wind and weather
The Kali Gandaki valley is notorious for strong afternoon winds that funnel up from the lowlands. We schedule our walks for the morning hours to avoid these gusts.
Fitness expectations
This is classified as an easy to moderate trek with daily walking durations of four hours. Previous hiking experience helps, but no technical climbing skills are required.
Local culture
Lower Mustang is heavily influenced by Tibetan culture and traditions. We ask our travelers to respect local customs, particularly when visiting monasteries and sacred temple grounds.
