Trip overview
Our fourteen-day Lower Mustang trek follows the ancient salt-caravan route along the Kali Gandaki River, situated in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massifs. This journey transitions from lush subtropical valleys of rhododendron and bamboo into the arid, windswept landscapes characteristic of the Tibetan plateau. We design this route for trekkers who want to experience diverse topography, traditional Thakali culture, and high-altitude desert scenery without extreme mountaineering hazards.
The trail takes us past stone villages, terraced fields, and deep gorges, offering sweeping views of peaks such as Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchhare. We encounter communities influenced heavily by Tibetan culture, visiting ancient monasteries, apple orchards in Marpha, and the sacred pilgrimage site of Muktinath. Along the way, we stay in local teahouses managed by families who have farmed and traded in these valleys for generations.
While the itinerary includes a challenging climb up the stone staircase to Ulleri and a gradual ascent toward the arid upper valley, the daily walking hours remain manageable for hikers with reasonable physical fitness. We maintain a steady pace to allow proper adjustment to the increasing altitude, culminating at Muktinath before we descend toward Jomsom for our return flight to Pokhara.

Good to know
Altitude & acclimatisation
Our highest overnight elevation on this trek is 3,800 m at Muktinath. While acute mountain sickness is less common at this height compared to higher Himalayan passes, we maintain a gradual ascent profile and encourage proper hydration throughout the trek.
Weather & winds
The Kali Gandaki valley is notorious for strong afternoon winds that blow upstream from the south. We generally aim to complete our morning walks before midday to avoid these heavy gusts along the river flats.
Teahouse accommodation
Lodges along the Lower Mustang route provide twin-share rooms with basic wooden beds and foam mattresses. Dining halls are usually heated by a central stove burning yak dung or wood in the evenings.
Physical preparation
You should prepare with cardiovascular training and stair-climbing exercises for several weeks prior to departure. Long descents and the 3,300 stone steps to Ulleri require good knee strength and balance.
