At a glance

Trip overview

Our eight-day Langtang Valley trek offers a focused alpine route through Nepal's first Himalayan national park. We take you past dense stands of fir, oak, and rhododendron before breaking out above the tree line into glacial valleys flanked by Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal. This itinerary suits trekkers seeking a balance of sustained physical effort and cultural depth without committing to a multi-week expedition.

We route our steps past traditional Tamang settlements and ancient mani walls, giving our team time to observe pastoral life where yaks graze on high alpine pastures. The terrain rises steadily from the Bhote Koshi riverbanks up to the sacred Buddhist settlement of Kyanjin Gompa at 3830m. From there, we push higher into the rugged periglacial zone to reach the panoramic ridge of Cherko Ri at 5050m.

While graded as easy to moderate, this route demands respectful pacing due to the gains above 3000m. Our lead guides monitor daily progress closely, ensuring proper acclimatisation before we ascend past the old Langtang village ruins. The journey concludes with an aerial descent, as a chartered helicopter lifts our team straight from the valley floor back to Kathmandu.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

We ascend steadily past 3000m, culminating in our highest point at Cherko Ri (5050m). Our daily mileage and altitude gains are kept within safe limits to reduce the risk of acute mountain sickness, and our guides carry pulse oximeters to monitor vital signs.

Fitness expectations

You should expect 4 to 6 hours of walking daily on uneven stone steps and dirt trails with sustained uphill sections. Regular cardiovascular training for at least a month prior to departure will make your trek considerably more enjoyable.

Teahouse accommodation

We lodge in family-run mountain teahouses that provide twin-share rooms with basic wooden beds and foam mattresses. Dining areas are heated by central metal stoves, but bedrooms are unheated, so a good sleeping bag is essential.

Meals and water safety

Full board meals are provided on the trek, featuring a mix of traditional dal bhat, noodle soups, momos, and Western items. We advise treating all drinking water with purification tablets or buying boiled water at teahouses.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the helicopter return different from a standard trek?

Instead of walking four days back down the same trail from Kyanjin Gompa to Syabrubesi, our team boards a direct helicopter flight to Kathmandu, saving time and offering an aerial perspective of the Himalayas.

How cold does it get at night on the Langtang trek?

Temperatures at higher elevations like Kyanjin Gompa frequently drop below freezing after sunset, especially during spring and autumn evenings.

Are trekking poles necessary for this route?

Yes, we strongly recommend trekking poles to protect your knees during the long descent from Cherko Ri and down stone staircases.

Do I need to carry my own luggage?

No, our porters carry your main duffle bag. You only need to carry a small daypack with your water, rain jacket, and camera.

Is travel insurance mandatory for this trek?

Yes, your insurance policy must cover emergency helicopter evacuation up to 5100m in the event of severe altitude sickness or injury.

What kind of power supply is available for charging devices?

Teahouses offer electricity in the dining hall for charging phones and camera batteries, usually for a small hourly fee.
