Trip overview
Our nine-day itinerary for the Khair Lake and Khopra Ridge Trek provides a quieter alternative to the heavily traveled routes of the Annapurna sanctuary. We lead you away from the main trails into rugged wilderness sectors where ridge-top viewpoints reveal expansive vistas of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I, and Machhapuchhre. This journey suits hikers with previous high-altitude experience who are comfortable walking four to six hours daily on uneven terrain.
We begin our walking route from Nayapul after a short drive from Pokhara, climbing initially through terraced farmland and dense rhododendron and magnolia forests toward Ghorepani. From there, our path diverges eastward onto quieter ridgelines, passing through remote settlements like Sauta and Chistibung before ascending to our high camp at Khopra Ridge at 3,870 m. Two nights at this elevation allow us to attempt the challenging day excursion to the sacred glacial pond of Khair Lake at 4,620 m, surrounded directly by the towering walls of Annapurna South and VaraShikar.
Cultural immersion forms an essential part of our daily routine on this trail. We stay in local lodges operated by Gurung and Magar communities, sharing communal dining spaces and supporting local enterprise. While the infrastructure is simpler than on commercial teahouse highways, our team ensures proper pacing, daily acclimatisation checks, and safe mountain travel throughout the trip.

Before you go
Good to know
Altitude & acclimatisation
Our route reaches its highest point at Khair Lake (4,620 m), with our highest overnight stop at Khopra Ridge (3,870 m). We build a two-night stay into our itinerary at Khopra Ridge to allow our bodies time to adjust safely before attempting the higher day hike.
Our lead guides monitor every participant daily for early symptoms of acute mountain sickness. We maintain a slow, measured walking pace and carry a comprehensive first aid kit on every trip.
Accommodation & meals
We stay in basic, family-run teahouses and local lodges along the trekking route, offering twin-share rooms with shared washing facilities. Facilities become simpler as we gain altitude above the tree line.
Meals are prepared fresh in lodge kitchens, featuring staples such as dal bhat, noodle soups, potato dishes, and momos. We advise drinking treated or boiled water throughout the trek.
Physical preparation
This trip involves daily walking durations of four to six hours on steep, stone-paved paths, tree roots, and occasional scree. We recommend cardiovascular training, stair climbing, and long day hikes with a loaded daypack several months prior to departure.
Previous multi-day hiking experience in mountainous terrain is strongly recommended to ensure you enjoy the physical demands of high-altitude days.
Responsible trekking
We adhere to strict low-impact principles across all our routes, minimizing single-use plastics and encouraging the use of refillable bottles. We pack out all non-degradable waste whenever possible.
Employment practices within our team ensure fair wages, proper insurance, and adequate cold-weather gear for all our local guides and porters.
