At a glance

Trip overview

We design this four-day journey to pair the urban density and sacred architecture of the Kathmandu Valley with the quiet hilltop horizon of Nagarkot. Moving between medieval palace squares and major Buddhist and Hindu shrines, we trace centuries of Newari craftsmanship, religious ritual, and daily trade across three distinct city districts.

This itinerary suits travellers who want a balanced introduction to Nepal's living heritage without undertaking strenuous mountain trekking. We spend our days walking through brick-paved courtyards, observing active pilgrimage sites along the Bagmati River, and navigating bustling market lanes alongside local residents.

Our route transitions from the capital to the surrounding hills, reaching a maximum elevation of 2175 m at Nagarkot. Here, clear mornings reveal the eastern Himalayan skyline, stretching from the Langtang and Manaslu ranges toward the distant peaks of the Khumbu.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude considerations

Our highest overnight stop is Nagarkot at 2175 m. While this elevation does not pose a risk of acute mountain sickness, we pace our walking days to ensure you remain comfortable throughout.

Physical preparation

This is a cultural tour rather than a trek, but you should expect several hours of walking each day over uneven stone paving, brick courtyards, and occasional dirt paths.

Cultural etiquette

When visiting temples and religious sites, we ask that you dress modestly, removing shoes where indicated and walking clockwise around stupas and mani walls.

Best time to visit

We run this itinerary throughout the year, though autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) offer the clearest mountain views and most stable weather for sightseeing.
