At a glance

Trip overview

We operate this comprehensive 24-day expedition into the remote Kanchenjunga region of eastern Nepal, tracing routes beneath the towering masses of the world's third highest mountain at 8586 m. This trek suits seasoned hikers who seek wilderness solitude away from the commercial tea-house trails found in the central Himalayas. The route cuts through the Kanchenjunga National Park, a protected biosphere spanning 2035 square kilometres along the Tibet and India borders, known for its dense rhododendron forests, alpine meadows, and rare high-altitude wildlife.

Our journey covers both the North Base Camp, known as Pang Pema at 5140 m, and the South Base Camp, or Yalung Base Camp, situated at 4730 m. Walking through these valleys requires physical stamina and careful management of altitude. Teahouses in the region remain basic, offering simple shelter and hearty meals, while certain higher sections involve camping where lodges are absent. We manage all logistics, permits, and safety protocols to ensure a steady, measured ascent through this restricted border zone.

Altitude & acclimatisation

Our itinerary includes dedicated rest days at Ghunsa and Khambachen to allow proper physiological adaptation before ascending above 5000 m. Our guides monitor all team members daily for signs of acute mountain sickness.

Physical preparation

This is a strenuous trek involving long days on rough mountain paths with significant elevation gains and losses. Prior multi-day trekking experience in high altitudes is essential.

Accommodation standards

Teahouses in the Kanchenjunga region are basic and rustic compared to Everest or Annapurna. Expect shared facilities and occasional tented nights at higher elevations where permanent lodges do not exist.

Permit regulations

Because Kanchenjunga is a designated restricted area, solo trekking is strictly prohibited by government rules. All travelers must be accompanied by a licensed guide and travel on booked agency permits.
