At a glance
Trip overview
Our 7-day Helambu route explores the mountain ridges and valleys immediately north of the Kathmandu Valley rim. We designed this itinerary for walkers seeking a shorter, culturally rich route that stays below the extreme altitudes of the main Himalayan chain while still offering extensive mountain panoramas and traditional village stays.
We begin our walking route from Sundarijal after a short drive out of the capital. Our path ascends through the protected woodlands of Shivapuri and the southern reaches of Langtang National Park, continuing along high ridges toward Chisapani, Kutumsang, and Thadepati at 3,795 m. From these elevated vantage points, our team frequently observes clear sightlines toward Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, and Jugal Himal.
Descending past Melamchi Gaon, we enter the heartland of the Hyalmo and Tamang communities. We spend time exploring traditional stone villages, local Buddhist monasteries, and chortens adorned with prayer flags. While our route does not demand technical mountaineering, the daily ascents and descents across rugged ridgelines require solid cardiovascular fitness and sure footing on uneven stone staircases.

Good to know
Altitude & acclimatisation
Our highest point on this route reaches 3,795 m at Thadepati. While this elevation is lower than major base camp treks, our itineraries still build in gradual ascents to help your body adjust to thinner air.
Our guides monitor all participants daily for any early signs of altitude-related discomfort and carry pulse oximeters and comprehensive first aid medical supplies.
Fitness expectations
The Helambu route is graded as moderate, featuring consistent daily ups and downs across stone staircases and ridgeline paths rather than long, high-altitude glacier crossings.
We recommend that all participants engage in cardiovascular training, such as running, cycling, or weighted stair hiking, for at least two months prior to departure.
Accommodation & meals
We accommodate you in family-run local lodges along the trail, which provide twin-share rooms with basic wooden beds and foam mattresses. Dining is taken in the communal lodge dining hall, where you can order fresh meals ranging from traditional dal bhat to noodle soups and porridge.
Hot showers and device charging are generally available at most stops for a small local fee.
Best time to trek
We operate our Helambu departures primarily during the autumn months of September through November and the spring season from February through June. During these periods, daytime temperatures are stable, precipitation is low, and mountain visibility is at its highest.
Winter months bring heavy snow over Thadepati ridge, while summer brings monsoon rains and leeches to the lower forested sections.
