We guide a compact five-day alpine trek through the Langtang region to the sacred waters of Gosainkunda Lake at 4300 m.

At a glance

Trip overview

Our five-day alpine trek takes us into the high-altitude lake basin of Gosainkunda within the Langtang National Park. This route is designed for hikers who want a rigorous mountain itinerary without committing to a multi-week expedition. We begin our journey with a drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche, setting off on foot through temperate deciduous forests before climbing above the tree line into stark alpine terrain.

Gosainkunda Lake sits at an altitude of 4300 m and holds deep religious significance for both Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva thrust his trident into the mountain rocks to create the lake and cool the burning poison he drank during the Samudra Manthan. Surrounded by more than a hundred smaller tarns, the main basin offers striking views of the Langtang Himalayan range.

While the total walking distance is relatively short, the daily ascent profile demands solid cardiovascular fitness and proper pacing. We cross steep terrain and gain significant elevation quickly, making altitude awareness essential for every participant. Our team manages logistics, teahouse bookings, and safety protocols so we can focus entirely on the trail.

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

Our route climbs rapidly above 3000 m and peaks at 4300 m at Gosainkunda Lake. Because the itinerary is short, we monitor all participants closely for early symptoms of acute mountain sickness and maintain a sensible ascent rate.

Fitness expectations

This is a physically demanding trek featuring long daily climbs and steep inclines of up to 70 degrees in places. We strongly recommend completing cardiovascular conditioning and endurance training for at least one month prior to departure.

Teahouse accommodation

We stay in local lodges along the trail that provide twin-share rooms with basic wooden beds and blankets. Dining areas are usually heated by a central stove, though guest rooms themselves are unheated.

Travel insurance requirement

All participants must carry comprehensive travel insurance that explicitly covers emergency helicopter evacuation and medical treatment up to 4500 m. Please ensure your policy document lists these provisions before you leave home.
