At a glance

Trip overview

Our 13-day Gokyo Lake Heli Shuttle Trek takes us deep into the Khumbu Valley, following a quieter, less congested route than the standard Everest Base Camp trail. We designed this itinerary for trekkers who want to experience the high-altitude glacial landscapes of the Sherpa homeland without retracing their steps on the return journey. The trail winds past pine forests, suspension bridges draped in prayer flags, and traditional stone villages before opening up into the dramatic high valleys of the upper Khumbu.

The centerpiece of our journey is the string of sacred glacial lakes at Gokyo, situated beneath the massive flanks of Cho Oyu. We navigate the terminal moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier—the longest glacier in the Nepal Himalaya—and ascend Gokyo Ri at 5,364 m for panoramic views encompassing Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Along the way, we cross into Sagarmatha National Park, where we encounter native Himalayan flora and fauna, including the Himalayan snowcock.

This route suits trekkers with previous high-altitude experience who maintain a solid baseline of cardiovascular fitness. We build proper acclimatization days into our schedule, spending two nights in Namche Bazaar and stopping at Phortse Thanka and Machhermo to allow our bodies to adjust safely to the thinning air. Teahouses along the route provide basic twin-share accommodation and hearty meals.

By incorporating a helicopter flight from Gokyo back to Lukla, we eliminate the multi-day descent on foot, offering a streamlined exit that showcases the rugged topography from the air. We lead every departure with experienced local guides who know the terrain, weather patterns, and mountain communities intimately.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu

Meals: B

Our representative meets our team at Tribhuvan International Airport upon arrival and escorts us to our designated hotel. We gather in the afternoon for a pre-trip briefing where we review safety protocols, gear lists, and the route ahead.

Day 2

Acclimatisation and Rest in Kathmandu

Meals: B / L / D

We spend our second day in Kathmandu allowing our bodies to recover from international travel and time zone changes. Our team checks all personal trekking gear and finalizes permits.

Day 3

Fly to Lukla and Trek to Phakding

Meals: B / L / D

We take an early morning flight from Kathmandu or Manthali airport to Lukla at 2,840 m. Upon landing, we organize our porter loads and begin our initial descent toward the Dudh Koshi river valley, reaching the village of Phakding.

Day 4

Phakding to Namche Bazaar

Meals: B / L / D

We cross several suspension bridges over the raging Dudh Koshi, passing through pine and cedar woods. After registering at the Sagarmatha National Park checkpost at Monjo, we make the steep, steady climb up to the bustling trading hub of Namche Bazaar.

Day 5

Acclimatisation Day in Namche Bazaar

Meals: B / L / D

We dedicate today to altitude adaptation by taking a morning hike up to Hotel Everest View via Syangboche. This outing exposes us to thin air and delivers our first clear prospects of Ama Dablam and Everest before we return to Namche for the afternoon.

Day 6

Namche Bazaar to Phortse Thanka

Meals: B / L / D

We leave Namche and contour along the hillside toward Sansa, where the trail splits away from the main Everest Base Camp route. We descend slightly to the Dudh Koshi before climbing past rhododendron thickets to reach Phortse Thanka.

Day 7

Phortse Thanka to Machhermo

Meals: B / L / D

We climb steadily out of the valley through old-growth pine forests and dwarf juniper bushes, bypassing Dole. The valley opens up as we approach Machhermo, where we take time to rest and monitor our hydration levels.

Day 8

Machhermo to Gokyo Lake

Meals: B / L / D

We climb a ridge offering views down to Kantega and up toward Cho Oyu, then descend to the riverbank before ascending the lateral moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier. We walk alongside the moraine to reach the first of the sacred Gokyo lakes.

Day 9

Hike to Fifth Lake and Ngozumba Tse, Return to Gokyo

Meals: B / L / D

We set out early past the fourth lake to reach the fifth lake and Ngozumba Tse viewpoint near the base of Cho Oyu. This excursion provides close-up views of the glacier and surrounding high peaks before we retrace our steps to Gokyo.

Day 10

Gokyo Ri Ascent and Heli Flight to Lukla

Meals: B / L / D

We make a pre-dawn push to the summit of Gokyo Ri at 5,364 m to watch the sun rise over the high Himalaya. Afterward, we return to Gokyo village where our charter helicopter waits to fly us safely back over the ridges to Lukla.

Day 11

Lukla to Kathmandu Flight

Meals: B / L / D

We board our morning flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu or Manthali airport. Upon arrival, we transfer back to our hotel for a final group dinner and celebration.

Day 12

Contingency Day in Kathmandu

Meals: B / L / D

We hold this day in reserve to account for potential mountain flight delays due to changeable weather in Lukla. If flights run on schedule, we use the day for independent city exploration.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

We cross 5,000 m on this trek, with our highest point at Gokyo Ri (5,364 m). Our itinerary includes two nights in Namche Bazaar and gradual daily gains to mitigate acute mountain sickness (AMS).

Our guides carry pulse oximeters to monitor oxygen saturation levels daily, and we urge all members to communicate any symptoms of headaches or fatigue immediately.

Teahouse accommodation

Accommodation on the trail consists of family-run mountain lodges offering twin-share rooms with wooden beds, foam mattresses, and blankets. Facilities are communal, and hot showers or device-charging usually incur a small extra fee.

Dining rooms are heated by a central metal stove fueled by yak dung or wood during evening hours, providing a warm communal space to rest.

Flight logistics & weather

Flights between Kathmandu (or Manthali) and Lukla depend heavily on clear mountain visibility. During peak spring and autumn seasons, flights frequently operate out of Ramechhap (Manthali airport), requiring a pre-dawn road transfer from Kathmandu.

We always build contingency time into our schedules to handle unexpected weather delays common in mountain aviation.

Physical preparation

Trekkers should prepare with consistent cardiovascular training—such as running, cycling, or stair-climbing—several months prior to departure. Carrying a daypack weighing 5 kg to 7 kg uphill for six hours daily requires solid leg strength and endurance.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the Gokyo Lake Heli Shuttle Trek?

We rate this trek as moderate. While technical mountaineering skills are not required, you will hike up to 7 hours a day at high altitudes, culminating in the climb up Gokyo Ri at 5,364 m.

Why do we take a helicopter back from Gokyo?

The helicopter return replaces the multi-day downhill walk from Gokyo to Lukla, saving time and offering an aerial perspective of the Khumbu region while avoiding physical fatigue.

What happens if the Lukla flight is delayed?

Mountain weather can disrupt flights. We include a contingency day in Kathmandu and maintain flexible schedules to manage minor delays safely.

Do I need travel insurance for this trek?

Yes, comprehensive travel insurance that explicitly covers emergency helicopter evacuation up to 6,000 m is mandatory for all participants on our trips.

What kind of food is available on the trail?

Teahouses serve a mix of Nepali dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables), Tibetan bread, noodles, pasta, and simple porridges. Meat options become scarce and less reliable at higher elevations.

How much weight can my porter carry?

Our porters carry a shared duffel bag with a strict weight limit of 9 kg to 10 kg per trekker. You will carry your own daypack with daily essentials like water, layers, and rain gear.
