Trip overview
Our Gokyo Chola Pass Trek connects the classic Everest Base Camp route with the high-altitude glacial valleys of Gokyo, linked by the challenging Cho La Pass at 5420 m. We design this 16-day circuit specifically for experienced hikers who possess sound cardiovascular fitness and comfort with technical moraine terrain. By following an anti-clockwise loop through Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, we ensure our team maintains a methodical acclimatisation schedule before breaching the five-thousand-metre threshold.
The trail takes us past roaring glacial rivers like the Dudh Koshi, through rhododendron forests, and deep into Sherpa settlements such as Phortse, Dole, and Khumjung. We stand beneath towering ice faces including Ama Dablam, Cholatse, and Taboche, before stepping onto the rocky expanse of the Khumbu Glacier to reach Everest Base Camp at 5364 m. Beyond the base camp, we cross the snow and ice of the Cho La Pass to descend into the serene turquoise waters of the Gokyo valley, where we climb Gokyo Ri for expansive panoramas of Cho Oyu and Everest.
Accommodations throughout the trek consist of basic mountain teahouses operated by local Sherpa families, offering simple twin-share rooms and communal dining stoves. While the rewards are immense, this route demands respect for the altitude, unpredictable mountain weather, and sustained daily effort. We provide experienced government-licensed mountain guides and porters to support our groups safely through every stage of this high-altitude traverse.

Good to know
Altitude & acclimatisation
We design our itinerary with dedicated acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, plus a high point at Kala Patthar (5545 m). Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a real hazard above 3000 m, so we monitor our team members closely for symptoms and maintain a slow, steady walking pace.
Teahouse accommodation
We stay in family-run mountain lodges along the entire route. Rooms are simple and twin-share, featuring wooden beds with foam mattresses and blankets. Dining areas are heated by central dung- or wood-burning stoves, though individual sleeping rooms remain unheated.
Required travel insurance
Every participant must carry comprehensive travel insurance that explicitly covers emergency helicopter evacuation up to 6000 m and high-altitude medical treatment. We require a copy of your insurance policy before departure from Kathmandu.
Guide and porter safety
Per current regulations, solo trekking is not permitted in Nepal, so we provide an experienced government-licensed mountain guide and strong local porters. Our team carries comprehensive medical kits and pulse oximeters to track daily oxygen saturation levels.

Frequently asked questions
How difficult is the Cho La Pass compared to standard Everest Base Camp?
The Cho La Pass is significantly more demanding due to its steep, rocky moraine and potential snow or ice cover at 5420 m. It requires solid footing, basic sure-footedness on uneven terrain, and good physical conditioning beyond what is needed for the standard EBC trail.
What is the sleeping arrangement in the teahouses?
Teahouses offer basic twin-share rooms with wooden framed beds, foam mattresses, and pillows. You will need to bring your own warm sleeping bag rated to at least -15°C.
Are charging facilities and hot showers available on the trail?
Most teahouses provide device charging and hot bucket or gas showers for a small extra fee, which increases as you gain altitude.
What happens if flights from Lukla are delayed due to weather?
Mountain weather in Lukla can change rapidly, causing flight delays. We recommend adding two buffer days to your international travel schedule to account for potential delays.
Do I need to carry my own luggage?
No, our porters carry the main duffel bags containing your heavy gear. You only need to carry a lightweight daypack containing your water, rain shell, camera, and valuables.
What permits do we need for this trek?
We secure the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality local entrance fee on your behalf before starting the trek.
