We lead a 12-day trek through the Khumbu to the turquoise alpine lakes of Gokyo and the summit of Gokyo Ri at 5357 m.

At a glance

Trip overview

Our Gokyo Lake Trek takes us deep into the Khumbu region, following ancient trails away from the main Everest Base Camp route toward a series of high-altitude glacial lakes. These turquoise waters, held beneath the massive bulk of Cho Oyu and fed by the Ngozumpa Glacier, form one of the highest wetland systems in the world. We designed this itinerary for hikers who want to experience high-altitude Himalayan terrain while bypassing the heavier foot traffic found on the base camp trail.

The route demands respect for altitude as we climb past 4000 m through Dole and Machhermo before reaching the lodges at Gokyo (4790 m). Our lead guides are local Sherpa professionals who monitor our pace and ensure proper acclimatization. We spend an acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar (3440 m) with a hike toward Khumjung, allowing our bodies to adjust before pushing higher into the alpine zone.

Beyond the third lake, we climb the steep switchbacks of Gokyo Ri (5357 m) in the early morning for panoramic views encompassing Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. We stay in traditional stone teahouses managed by local families, eating simple, high-carbohydrate meals prepared over gas or wood stoves. This journey suits experienced walkers with good cardiovascular endurance and a tolerance for cold mountain lodges.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

This trek reaches a maximum altitude of 5357 m at Gokyo Ri, with overnight stays up to 4790 m at Gokyo. We build structured rest days and gradual elevation gains into our itinerary to help your body adapt safely to the thin air.

Our guides carry pulse oximeters to check your oxygen saturation daily. If symptoms of acute mountain sickness appear, our team is trained to manage descents immediately.

Teahouse accommodation

Lodges along the Gokyo trail offer basic twin-share rooms built from stone or timber, furnished with two single beds, foam mattresses, and blankets. You will need to bring your own sleeping bag rated for sub-zero temperatures.

Dining rooms are communal and heated by a central metal stove burning yak dung or wood in the evenings. Electricity and Wi-Fi are usually available for a small hourly or per-device fee.

Physical preparation

You should prepare with consistent cardiovascular training such as running, cycling, or stair climbing for at least three months prior to departure. Back-to-back day hikes with a 5 kg to 7 kg daypack will prepare your joints for the daily descents.

Mental resilience is equally important, as you will walk 5 to 7 hours daily on uneven stone steps and moraine trails in cold conditions.

Travel insurance requirements

We require all participants to carry comprehensive travel insurance that explicitly covers emergency helicopter evacuation up to 6000 m and high-altitude medical treatment. Please carry a printed copy of your policy and emergency contact details with you on the trek.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the Gokyo Lake Trek?

The trek is rated moderate to challenging. While it avoids the technical mountaineering of peak climbing, you will walk 5 to 7 hours daily at high altitudes up to 5357 m.

Do I need prior trekking experience?

Previous multi-day hiking experience is strongly recommended. You should be comfortable walking on uneven rocky paths and steep stone staircases for consecutive days.

What is the highest sleeping altitude on this trek?

The highest overnight stop is at Gokyo village at 4790 m. We also climb to 5357 m during the morning hike up Gokyo Ri, but return to sleep at lower elevations.

What permits are required for the Gokyo Lake Trek?

You need the Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit, both of which are arranged by our team.

Are flights to Lukla reliable?

Lukla flights depend entirely on mountain weather conditions and can experience delays or cancellations. We advise adding 2 to 3 buffer days to your international itinerary.

Can I charge my electronic devices on the trail?

Yes, most teahouses offer electricity to charge phones and camera batteries, though they charge a small fee per hour since power comes from solar panels or small generators.
