We guide you through the valleys of Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha on a five-day cultural exploration of ancient dzongs and monasteries.

At a glance

Trip overview

We have designed this five-day journey to offer a focused introduction to Bhutan's cultural landscape, taking you across high mountain passes, river valleys, and historic administrative centers. Set between steep Himalayan ridges, the kingdom maintains a distinct rhythm shaped by Buddhist philosophy and architectural traditions that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. Our route connects the key valleys of Paro, Thimphu, and Punakha, providing a balanced mix of urban heritage sites, rural walks, and mountain vistas.

This itinerary suits travelers looking for a well-paced cultural tour without strenuous trekking demands, though the final day does include a steady climb to Taktshang Monastery. Along the way, our local guides share context on daily religious life, historical fortifications known as dzongs, and regional conservation practices. We handle all logistics, including regional permits and private ground transport, so you can focus on the surroundings.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Paro and Drive to Thimphu

Meals: B

Our team meets you upon your arrival at Paro International Airport. After completing entry formalities, we drive toward Thimphu, stopping along the way at Chuzom where the Paro and Thimphu rivers converge beneath three distinctive stupas.

Continuing along the valley floor, we visit Buddha Point to view the Sakyamuni statue and pay our respects at the King's Memorial Chorten before settling in for the evening in the capital.

Day 2

Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass

Meals: B / L / D

After breakfast, our vehicle climbs out of Thimphu toward Dochula Pass, marked by 108 memorial chortens. On clear mornings, we pause here to observe the snow-capped Himalayan peaks along the northern frontier.

We then descend into the warmer Punakha Valley to walk across local agricultural fields toward Chimi Lhakhang, finishing our afternoon at the confluence-built Punakha Dzong.

Day 3

Punakha to Paro

Meals: B / L / D

We retrace our route back through the western valleys, making stops at roadside viewpoints as we follow the Wangchu and Paro Chhu rivers.

Upon returning to Paro, we visit Ta Dzong, the historic watchtower that now houses the National Museum, before walking down the hillside to the courtyards of Rinpung Dzong.

Day 4

Hike to Taktshang Monastery

Meals: B / L / D

An early start brings us to the base of the trail leading to Taktshang Monastery, commonly known as Tiger's Nest. We ascend through blue pine forests along a graded dirt path to reach the primary viewpoints.

After spending time exploring the cliffside shrines where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated, we descend back to the valley and visit the seventh-century Kyichu Lhakhang in the late afternoon.

Day 5

Departure from Paro

Meals: B

Our team transfers you to Paro International Airport following breakfast for your departing flight across the Himalayan range.

We assist with final check-in procedures and bid you farewell as you board your aircraft.

Fitness & Terrain

This tour involves standard walking tours on paved and uneven stone surfaces, alongside one sustained uphill hike on Day 4 to Taktshang Monastery. We recommend a basic level of cardiovascular fitness and comfortable walking shoes.

Visa & Documentation

We process your official Bhutan visa clearance prior to your arrival using your passport details. The physical visa stamp is issued at Paro International Airport upon presentation of our clearance letter.

Cultural Etiquette

When visiting monasteries and dzongs with us, please dress conservatively with shoulders and knees covered. Photography is generally restricted inside temple sanctums, and our guides will inform you where images are permitted.

Currency & Payments

The Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN) is pegged to the Indian Rupee, which is also widely accepted in larger establishments. We recommend carrying some cash for small purchases, as credit card acceptance is limited outside major towns.
