We lead experienced hikers across the remote 5,130 m Ganja La Pass in the Langtang region, combining rugged high-altitude camping with Tamang culture.

At a glance

Trip overview

Our Ganja La Pass Trek is a demanding high-altitude crossing designed for seasoned mountaineers and fit trekkers seeking a remote route in the Langtang region. Rising to a maximum elevation of 5,130 m, the trail traverses challenging terrain far removed from the more crowded tea house corridors of Nepal. We combine technical high-pass travel with deep cultural immersion, passing through traditional Tamang and Sherpa settlements where ancient Buddhist traditions remain central to daily life.

We begin our journey with a drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Bensi before following the Langtang Khola upstream through dense forests of oak and rhododendron. As we gain elevation past Lama Hotel and Langtang Village toward Kyanjing Gompa, the landscape transforms into a dramatic alpine amphitheatre flanked by snow-capped peaks. The crux of our expedition involves ascending to Ganja La Phedi and crossing the glaciated Ganja La Pass, followed by a descent into the Helambu watershed and a final drive back to Kathmandu.

This route demands strong physical conditioning, robust mental resilience, and previous multi-day hiking experience at altitude. Weather conditions over the 5,130 m pass can change rapidly, requiring careful pacing and support from our experienced team of guides and porters. We handle all logistics, permits, and camping arrangements to ensure our team operates safely in this demanding wilderness environment.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

Our route crosses Ganja La Pass at 5,130 m and includes multiple days above 3,500 m. We incorporate deliberate acclimatization hikes, such as our ascent to Chorkari Ri at 5,050 m, to help our team adapt safely to lower oxygen levels.

Our lead guides monitor every participant daily for early symptoms of acute mountain sickness. We carry a comprehensive first-aid kit and maintain evacuation protocols throughout the wilderness sections.

Fitness expectations

This trek is classed as challenging and requires strong cardiovascular endurance and previous high-altitude hiking experience. Daily walking distances range from 5 km to 14 km over steep, rocky, and potentially snow-covered terrain.

We recommend undertaking structured endurance training, including stair climbing and weighted rucking, for at least three months prior to departure.

Accommodation & meals

During the lower valley sections of the trek, we stay in twin-share teahouses operated by local families. On the high-altitude pass crossing days, our support team establishes fully serviced tented camps.

We provide three hot, carbohydrate-rich meals daily, accompanied by tea and coffee, supplemented by fresh seasonal fruit snacks along the trail.

Essential gear

Participants must bring a four-season sleeping bag, sturdy waterproof trekking boots, and layered technical clothing capable of withstanding sub-zero temperatures near the pass. We provide a down jacket, sleeping bag, and duffle bag for use during the trip.

Proper sun protection, trekking poles, and reliable headlamps with extra batteries are mandatory items for our daily departures.
