We lead a 21-day expedition across the Khumbu region, traversing Cho La and Renjo La passes while visiting Everest Base Camp.

At a glance

Trip overview

Our twenty-one-day expedition through the Khumbu region combines the classic route to Everest Base Camp with the remote valleys of Gokyo and the demanding crossings of Cho La and Renjo La passes. This trek is designed for experienced hikers who possess a strong cardiovascular base and a tolerance for sustained high-altitude exertion. We move deliberately through Sherpa settlements, alpine forests, and glacial moraines, allowing adequate time for physiological adaptation.

The route demands physical resilience as we navigate steep, rocky moraines and cross mountain passes exceeding 5300 metres. We start with the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, following the Dudh Koshi river upward through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche before reaching the base of the Khumbu Glacier. Beyond Everest Base Camp, our path diverges toward the high alpine lakes of Gokyo via the icy expanse of Cho La, and finally descends past Lunden and Thame after crossing Renjo La.

We provide comprehensive logistical support throughout the journey, pairing you with experienced local guides and porters who know these trails in all weather conditions. Accommodation is in standard mountain teahouses, where meals are prepared on-site. While the physical demands are high, the vantage points from Kala Patthar, Gokyo Ri, and the high passes offer unmatched perspectives of Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Ama Dablam.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

This trek reaches a maximum altitude of 5545 m at Kala Patthar, with multiple nights spent above 4000 m. We incorporate dedicated rest days in Namche Bazaar, Dingboche, and Gokyo to allow your body to adapt to the decreasing oxygen levels.

Our guides monitor all participants daily for symptoms of acute mountain sickness. Descending is the primary treatment for severe altitude illness, and our itineraries maintain flexibility for safety adjustments.

Fitness expectations

Participants must possess a high level of cardiovascular endurance and previous experience with multi-day hiking in rugged terrain. Daily walking stretches from five to nine hours over steep, uneven stone steps and high-altitude passes.

We strongly recommend starting a targeted training regimen of running, cycling, and weighted stair climbing at least three months prior to your departure date.

Teahouse accommodation

Lodging along the route consists of mountain teahouses operated by local families. Rooms are basic, typically furnished with twin beds, foam mattresses, and blankets.

Sanitary facilities are generally shared, and hot showers may rely on solar power or gas canisters with a nominal local fee. Electricity for device charging is available in most lodges for an extra charge.

Flight operations to Lukla

During peak trekking seasons (Spring and Autumn), flights to Lukla frequently operate out of Ramechhap (Manthali Airport) instead of Kathmandu due to air traffic congestion. This requires a 4-to-5-hour road transfer from Kathmandu in the middle of the night before catching the morning flight.
