At a glance

Trip overview

Our 18-day Three High Passes Trek is a complete circuit of the upper Khumbu region, designed for experienced mountaineers and strong trekkers. We cross three distinct high-altitude mountain passes—Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,360 m)—while also visiting Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and climbing Kala Patthar (5,545 m) and Gokyo Ri (5,357 m).

This route is suited only for participants with robust cardiovascular fitness, previous high-altitude experience, and comfort on steep, rocky moraines and occasional ice. We traverse ancient Sherpa trade routes, past the Ngozumpa and Khumbu glaciers, staying in local teahouses managed by Sherpa families in villages such as Thame and Dingboche.

By undertaking the circuit in this sequence, our team ensures proper acclimatisation before each high pass crossing. The walking days are long, frequently ranging from six to eight hours in thin air above 4,000 m, demanding patience, resilience, and steady pacing.

The trail crosses suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi and enters Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo. We make a sustained, steep climb up through pine forests to reach Namche Bazaar, the historical trading hub of the Khumbu.

Day 4

Acclimatisation Day in Namche Bazaar

Meals: B / L / D

We spend today aiding our red blood cell adaptation with a morning hike to Hotel Everest View (3,880 m) or Khumjung village. We return to Namche for the afternoon to rest.

Day 5

Namche Bazaar to Thame

Meals: B / L / D

Leaving the main Everest Base Camp trail, we head west up the Bhote Koshi valley. The trail contours quietly through pine woods before descending to cross a suspension bridge and climbing to Thame, an authentic Sherpa village known for its mountaineering history.

Day 6

Thame to Marlung

Meals: B / L / D

We follow ancient salt-trading tracks north along the Bhote Koshi river. The valley narrows as we gain elevation past stone mani walls and herders' huts, arriving at Marlung.

Day 7

Marlung to Lungden

Meals: B / L / D

Today's short walk takes us deeper into the high alpine zone. We ascend steadily along a rocky path above the river to reach Lungden, our staging post before the Renjo La pass.

Day 8

Lungden across Renjo La to Gokyo

Meals: B / L / D

We start before dawn to climb the steep, rocky staircase to Renjo La (5,360 m). The descent takes us past the turquoise waters of Gokyo Lake down to the stone lodges on its shore.

Day 9

Gokyo Ri Ascent and Trek to Tagnag

Meals: B / L / D

We climb early to the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) for a panorama of Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Everest. Afterwards, we descend and cross the debris-covered Ngozumpa Glacier to reach the small settlement of Tagnag.

Day 10

Tagnag across Cho La to Dzongla

Meals: B / L / D

We navigate the steep, narrow gorge leading up to Cho La (5,420 m). The final approach crosses a small glacier that requires careful footing before we descend past frozen streams to Dzongla.

Day 11

Dzongla to Lobuche

Meals: B / L / D

The trail contours beneath the Cholatse and Taboche walls, traversing grassy ridges before joining the main Everest trail at Thukla. We continue up the valley floor to the cluster of lodges at Lobuche.

Day 12

Lobuche to Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp

Meals: B / L / D

We trek alongside the Khumbu Glacier to Gorak Shep, our lunch stop. In the afternoon, we continue over moraine ridges to reach Everest Base Camp (5,364 m), returning to Gorak Shep for the night.

Day 13

Kala Patthar Ascent and Trek to Lobuche

Meals: B / L / D

We make a cold pre-dawn climb to the rocky summit of Kala Patthar (5,545 m) to watch sunrise strike the south face of Everest. We then descend to Gorak Shep for breakfast before walking back down to Lobuche.

Day 14

Lobuche across Kongma La to Dingboche

Meals: B / L / D

Our final and highest pass requires crossing the vast, rugged moraine of the Khumbu Glacier to reach the summit of Kongma La (5,535 m). We descend steeply past pristine alpine lakes down into the Imja Khola valley to Dingboche.

Day 15

Dingboche to Tengboche

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

Our itinerary includes strategic rest and acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, plus gradual ascents to high camps. Altitude sickness (AMS) is a genuine risk on this route as three consecutive passes exceed 5,300 m. Our guides carry pulse oximeters and first-aid kits on every departure.

Physical fitness requirements

This is a strenuous, technical trek requiring excellent cardiovascular endurance and prior high-altitude hiking experience. You must be comfortable walking 6 to 9 hours daily over rough moraine, steep stone staircases, and occasional snow or ice.

Teahouse accommodation

Lodges along the Three Passes route are basic and unheated in dining halls. Rooms are twin-share with wooden beds, foam mattresses, and shared facilities. Hot showers and device charging incur small extra fees set by local lodge owners.

Flight delays in Lukla

Mountain weather is notoriously unpredictable. Flights between Kathmandu and Lukla can be delayed or cancelled by low cloud or high winds. We advise adding two buffer days to your international travel schedule to account for potential delays.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum altitude reached on this trek?

The highest point on our route is Kala Patthar at 5,545 m, closely followed by the three passes: Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,360 m).

Do I need mountaineering experience for the Three Passes?

Technical mountaineering equipment like ice axes and crampons are generally not required, but you must be comfortable walking on steep, rocky moraines, icy sections of Cho La, and exposed ridges.

What happens if my Lukla flight is cancelled?

Mountain flights are weather-dependent. If flights are grounded, we will wait for the next available slot or arrange a chartered helicopter if conditions permit and you opt to cover the charter cost.

How heavy should my daypack be?

Carry only your essentials—water bottles, rain shell, warm layers, camera, and valuables—weighing around 5 kg to 7 kg. Our porters carry the main duffel bags.

Is drinking water safe along the trail?

Teahouses sell boiled water or bottled mineral water. Alternatively, we recommend carrying purification tablets or a UV purifier to treat local tap water.

What is the group size for your departures?

We operate both solo custom trips and small group departures, typically capped at 10 participants to ensure safety and personalised attention from our guides.
