At a glance

Trip overview

Our 19-day Everest Cho La Pass Trek is a demanding high-altitude journey designed for experienced hikers with strong stamina. We traverse roughly 136 to 140 km of rugged Himalayan terrain, weaving through Sherpa settlements, glacial moraines, and alpine valleys inside Sagarmatha National Park. This route connects the classic Everest Base Camp trail with the remote Gokyo Valley by crossing one of the region's most challenging high passes.

We begin our expedition with a mountain flight from Kathmandu or Manthali to Lukla at 2860m, following the Dudh Koshi River upstream through pine and rhododendron forests. Acclimatization is built directly into our schedule with stops in Namche Bazaar at 3440m and Dingboche at 4410m, allowing our bodies to adjust safely to diminishing oxygen levels. Along the way, we visit historic Buddhist monasteries like Tengboche and witness traditional mountain life shaped by generations of Sherpa inhabitants.

The physical demands increase significantly as we push past Lobuche toward Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp at 5364m, where the Khumbu Icefall towers directly above us. Following our early morning ascent of Kala Patthar at 5545m, our route turns westward toward Dzongla to tackle the loose rock and steep snow slopes of Cho La Pass at 5420m. We then descend into the Gokyo Valley to admire its glacial lakes and climb Gokyo Ri before returning via Dole and Namche Bazaar to Lukla.

Teahouse accommodation along this route offers basic shelter, shared twin rooms, and hearty local meals to keep our energy levels high. While our support team carries heavy loads and manages logistics, participants must carry a daypack and be prepared for sub-zero night temperatures, steep ascents, and unpredictable mountain weather.

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

Our itinerary includes strategic rest and acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, as well as gradual elevation gains designed to mitigate acute mountain sickness. Our guides carry pulse oximeters to monitor blood-oxygen levels daily throughout the trek.

Fitness expectations

This is a strenuous high-altitude trek involving daily hikes of 5 to 8 hours over steep, rocky, and glaciated terrain. Participants must maintain a strong cardiovascular fitness regimen and have prior multi-day hiking experience in cold conditions.

Teahouse accommodation

We stay in family-run mountain lodges offering twin-share rooms furnished with wooden beds, foam mattresses, and blankets. Facilities become increasingly basic above Namche Bazaar, with shared toilet facilities and limited electricity.

Weather & mountain flights

Flights between Kathmandu/Manthali and Lukla are weather-dependent and subject to occasional delays or cancellations. We advise adding extra buffer days to your international travel plans to accommodate potential flight schedule changes.
