At a glance
Trip overview
We designed this 19-day itinerary for trekkers who want to approach Mount Everest on foot from the lower foothills rather than flying directly into Lukla. By starting our journey with a drive from Kathmandu to Ringmo via Phaplu, we bypass the congested airstrip and spend our initial days walking through the less-visited ridges of the lower Khumbu region. This alternative approach gives our team ample time to adjust to the terrain and provides a genuine look at rural mountain life.
As our trail climbs steadily north, we pass through rhododendron forests, cross suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi river, and eventually merge with the classic Everest trail at Phakding. From there, we continue through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche toward Gorakshep and Everest Base Camp. We also include a pre-dawn climb up Kala Patthar at 5545 m for panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
This trek suits hikers with a good level of physical fitness who are comfortable with daily walks of five to seven hours on varied mountain terrain. While the total duration is longer than the standard route, the gradual elevation gain through the Salleri trail offers better natural acclimatisation. We handle all logistics, permits, and teahouse arrangements to ensure a safe and self-reliant journey through the high mountains.

Good to know
Altitude & acclimatisation
Our itinerary includes dedicated acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, as well as a gradual ascent profile starting from Salleri. These rest stops allow your body to adjust to diminishing oxygen levels before we push above 5000 m.
Our lead guides monitor every participant daily for signs of acute mountain sickness. We carry a pulse oximeter and a comprehensive medical kit on all trips.
Teahouse accommodation
Along the trail, we accommodate you in local mountain teahouses run by Sherpa families. Rooms are basic and typically furnished with twin wooden beds, foam mattresses, and blankets.
Bathrooms are usually shared and located outside or down the hall. Hot showers and device-charging facilities are available in most villages for a small extra fee paid directly to the lodge.
Physical fitness requirements
This is a moderate trek involving daily walking hours between five and seven hours over uneven stone steps, rocky moraines, and steep ascents. You should prepare with cardiovascular exercise such as running, cycling, or stair climbing several months prior to departure.
Carrying a small daypack while your main duffel bag is portered will help build your stamina for the higher elevations.
Flight logistics and weather
Mountain flights in Nepal are subject to prevailing weather conditions. While our itinerary features the return flight from Lukla, we advise keeping a few buffer days at the end of your trip in case of minor weather delays.
During peak seasons, flights to and from Lukla may operate out of Manthali Airport in Ramechhap, requiring an overland transfer.

Frequently asked questions
How is the Salleri route different from the standard Lukla flight route?
The Salleri route begins with an overland drive rather than a flight into Lukla. It takes a few extra days and passes through lower, less-crowded hills before joining the main Everest trail at Phakding, offering a more gradual acclimatisation profile and a deeper look at rural life.
What is the maximum altitude we reach on this trek?
The highest elevation we reach is 5545 m at the summit of Kala Patthar. Everest Base Camp itself sits at an altitude of 5364 m.
Do I need previous trekking experience?
While previous multi-day hiking experience is helpful, it is not strictly required. You do need a solid level of cardiovascular fitness and the mental preparedness to walk for several hours uphill each day.
How heavy should my daypack be?
Your daypack should weigh between 5 kg and 7 kg. It should contain your daily essentials such as a waterproof jacket, warm layers, water bottles, sunscreen, and your camera. Porters carry your main duffel bag.
Are vegetarian food options available on the trek?
Yes, teahouses serve a variety of vegetarian dishes including dal bhat, noodle soups, fried rice, and vegetable momos. We advise avoiding meat dishes above Namche Bazaar for health and hygiene reasons.
What happens if my Lukla flight is delayed due to weather?
Mountain weather can occasionally disrupt flight schedules. Our team will coordinate alternative departure times as soon as visibility clears, which is why we recommend building buffer days into your overall travel schedule.
