We trek through the heart of the Khumbu to Everest Base Camp and across Cho La Pass to the Gokyo Lakes before returning by helicopter.

At a glance

Trip overview

Our 17-day expedition combines the classic route to Everest Base Camp with the alpine basins of the Gokyo Valley, linked by the high crossing of Cho La Pass at 5420 m. We designed this itinerary for experienced trekkers who want a comprehensive journey through the Khumbu region without retracing their steps on the return leg. We move at a deliberate pace, incorporating strategic acclimatisation stops in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche to manage the demands of altitude.

We begin with the flight to Lukla and follow the Dudh Koshi river north through Sagarmatha National Park. Along the trail, we pass through Sherpa settlements such as Phakding, Tengboche, and Lobuche, staying in local teahouses run by families. The terrain demands sustained physical effort, with long daily ascents on stone staircases, moraine ridges, and glacial paths, culminating in our approach to the base of Mount Everest and the high viewpoint of Kala Patthar at 5545 m.

After standing at Everest Base Camp and crossing the snow and ice of Cho La Pass, we reach the turquoise waters of the Gokyo Lakes and climb Gokyo Ri. To conclude the trek efficiently, we board a helicopter from Gokyo for a scenic flight back to Lukla, bypassing the multi-day descent. We provide experienced lead guides who handle all logistics, route navigation, and safety protocols throughout the journey.

Before you go

Good to know

Altitude management

We incorporate scheduled acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche, and our guides monitor daily symptoms of acute mountain sickness. We maintain a slow, steady pace on all ascents to allow our bodies to adjust safely to thinning oxygen levels.

Teahouse accommodation

We stay in family-run lodges along the trail that provide twin-share rooms with wooden beds and foam mattresses. Dining rooms are heated by central stoves, while charging and hot shower facilities incur small extra fees set by local lodge owners.

Lukla flight logistics

Flights to and from Lukla are subject to mountain weather conditions. During peak spring and autumn seasons, flights frequently operate out of Manthali Airport in Ramechhap rather than Kathmandu, requiring an early morning road transfer.

Physical preparation

This is a strenuous 17-day trek involving 5 to 7 hours of walking daily over steep, rocky terrain at high altitude. We recommend a structured cardiovascular and leg-strengthening training program several months prior to departure.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes trek?

This is a strenuous trek rated for experienced hikers. You will walk 5 to 7 hours daily across high-altitude terrain, cross Cho La Pass at 5420 m, and sleep at altitudes up to 5164 m at Gorakshep.

What happens if flights to Lukla are delayed?

Mountain weather can disrupt Lukla flights. We build contingency time into our schedules, but we recommend adding 2 to 3 buffer days at the end of your trip to accommodate international departure changes.

Do I need a porter to carry my luggage?

Yes, our packages include porter support on a 2:1 ratio, meaning one porter is shared between two trekkers, with a luggage weight limit of 10 kg per trekker.

What type of food is available in the teahouses?

Teahouses serve a mix of Nepali dal bhat, noodles, fried rice, pasta, soups, and momos. Meat is available at lower elevations, but we recommend sticking to vegetarian options above Namche Bazaar.

Is travel insurance mandatory for this trek?

Yes. Your insurance policy must explicitly cover high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation up to 6000 m.

How do we purify drinking water on the trail?

We recommend bringing iodine tablets, chlorine dioxide, or a UV purifier. Bottled water generates plastic waste and becomes increasingly expensive and frozen at higher altitudes.
