We traverse the historic high ridge trail between Paro and Thimphu, camping by alpine lakes beneath Bhutan's highest peaks.

At a glance

Trip overview

We lead this classic 7-day traverse following the historic foot trail that once served as the primary artery connecting Paro and Thimphu. Our route takes us across exposed ridges, through blue pine and dwarf rhododendron forests, and past isolated glacial tarns at elevations reaching 3700 m. We camp at designated picturesque sites while our support crew manages logistics and camp kitchen operations.

This journey suits hikers with prior multi-day experience who possess good cardiovascular endurance and comfort with consecutive days of walking above 3000 m. We begin our trip with crucial cultural acclimatisation in Paro, visiting Kichu Lhakhang and scaling the vertical granite cliff to Taktsang Monastery before our foot journey commences.

Our team navigates rolling terrain with daily ascents and descents along quiet paths once used exclusively by herders and traders. Clear autumn and spring skies frequently reveal distant summits including Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Gangkhar Puensum. We ensure a measured pace to support safe acclimatisation throughout the higher sections of the trail.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Paro and Cultural Exploration

Meals: B

Our flight into Paro International Airport crosses the main Himalayan range, offering aerial views of Jomolhari and Jichu Drake. Our guide greets us upon arrival and transfers us to our hotel. In the afternoon, we visit Kichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples, and continue to the ruins of Drugyal Dzong.

Day 2

Acclimatisation Hike to Taktsang Monastery

Meals: B / L / D

We undertake a demanding ascent through a steep pine forest to reach Taktsang Monastery, famously perched on a sheer granite cliff. This excursion provides essential physiological adaptation for the higher elevations we encounter later in the week. We return to Paro for the evening.

Day 3

Paro to Jele Dzong

Meals: B / L / D

We drive past the National Museum to the roadhead where our trekking crew and pack animals await. Our walk begins with a steady climb through apple orchards and blue pine woods, eventually arriving at Jele Dzong at 3700 m for our first camp.

Day 4

Jele Dzong to Jangchulakha

Meals: B / L / D

We leave human habitation behind and traverse ridgelines flanked by rhododendron bushes. The path undulates through sparse alpine terrain before reaching our campsite at Jangchulakha.

Day 5

Jangchulakha to Langrithang via Jimilangtsho

Meals: B / L / D

We follow a high route past glacial lakes, including Jimilangtsho, where large trout are sometimes visible in the cold water. Our descent brings us down through dwarf bamboo groves to the pasture at Langrithang.

Day 6

Langrithang to Thimphu via Tsaluna

Meals: B / L / D

Our final morning involves a sustained descent through forested valleys down to the village of Tsaluna. From there, a short vehicle transfer takes us to our hotel in Thimphu.

Day 7

Thimphu to Paro Departure

Meals: B

We check out of our Thimphu hotel after breakfast and drive back to Paro International Airport for our departing flight.
