At a glance

Trip overview

We organize this 18-day expedition to Imja Tse, popularly known as Island Peak, standing at 6,160 m above sea level in the Khumbu region of Nepal. First named by Eric Shipton's team in 1953, the mountain resembles an island set in a sea of ice when viewed from Dingboche. It serves as an accessible gateway for trekkers transitioning into technical mountaineering.

Our team leads every aspect of this climb, building upon decades of high-altitude experience in the Himalayas. We design our itinerary to allow adequate time for acclimatisation through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Dingboche before establishing our base at Chhukung. Prior big-mountain experience is not strictly required, as we conduct a dedicated training day on crampon use, fixed-line ascending, and rappelling before the summit push.

While the route involves straightforward trekking trails through Sherpa villages for the first week, the final ascent demands physical endurance and basic technical skills on snow and ice slopes. We maintain low climber-to-guide ratios to ensure safety and individual support during the pre-summit training and the early morning push to the ridge.

What is the success rate on Island Peak?

Our experienced Sherpa guides and structured acclimatisation schedule support a high success rate, though summit attempts remain subject to favorable weather and individual health.

What kind of physical fitness is required?

You should be capable of hiking for 4 to 7 hours daily over uneven terrain with a daypack, and have the stamina for a 10 to 12-hour summit day involving steep vertical ascents.

What happens in case of a medical emergency?

Our lead guides carry medical kits and pulse oximeters. In case of severe altitude sickness or injury, we coordinate emergency helicopter evacuation from accessible points along the route.
