We traverse the quiet lower Solu ridges before joining the high Khumbu trail to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar at 5,643 m.

At a glance

Trip overview

Our Phaplu via Everest Base Camp trek offers an extended approach to the world's most famous alpine valley. By starting our journey from the lower airstrip at Phaplu rather than flying directly into Lukla, we walk through quiet Sherpa, Rai, and Magar farming villages that see far fewer travelers. This route provides a deeper look at the rural middle hills before the trail climbs past the Dudh Kosi River and merges with the main Khumbu route.

As we ascend past Namche Bazaar and Tengboche, the landscape shifts from dense alpine forests to a stark glacial environment. We navigate moraines and high-altitude terrain to reach Everest Base Camp at 5,380 m and make a pre-dawn climb up the rocky ridge of Kala Patthar at 5,643 m for expansive views of Mount Everest, Nuptse, and the Khumbu Icefall. This itinerary is designed for experienced hikers comfortable with consecutive days of uphill walking at high altitudes.

Acclimatization is built into our schedule with planned stops at Namche Bazaar and higher altitude settlements. Teahouse accommodation along the way is basic but comfortable, offering simple twin-share rooms and hearty local meals. Our experienced guides manage safety protocols daily, ensuring our team moves at a sustainable pace suited to the changing terrain.
