At a glance

Trip overview

Our three-day ridge trek links the protected watersheds of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park with the panoramic viewpoints of Chisapani and Nagarkot. We designed this route for travelers who want a substantive hill walk with overnight stays in local teahouses without requiring a week or more in remote alpine valleys. The trail scales forested ridges, crosses drinking water reservoirs, and traverses rural settlements inhabited primarily by Tamang communities.

Walking conditions are straightforward on stone staircases, dirt paths, and occasional vehicle tracks. We maintain a steady pace as we climb from the valley floor through pine and rhododendron forests, emerging onto open ridgelines that afford wide perspectives across the Langtang, Manaslu, and Ganesh Himal ranges. On clear mornings, distant peaks of the Everest group also appear on the horizon.

We lead this trip with our licensed local guides who handle park registration, teahouse logistics, and route navigation. Because maximum elevations remain modest, technical gear and prior high-altitude conditioning are not required. We conclude the itinerary with a cultural exploration of Newari architecture at Bhaktapur Durbar Square before returning to Kathmandu by private vehicle.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Drive to Sundarijal; Trek to Chisapani

Meals: B

We depart Kathmandu by private vehicle for the short drive north to Sundarijal, where we complete our park entry formalities at the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park checkpoint. Our walking begins with a sustained climb alongside stone water pipes and cascading streams, ascending steeply through secondary forest to reach the settlement of Mulkharka.

After pausing for lunch, we cross the ridgeline and descend through dense pine woods into the Langtang watershed, eventually reaching the Tamang village of Chisapani. In the evening, we settle into a local lodge and watch the sunset light up the surrounding hills.

Day 2

Trek from Chisapani to Nagarkot

Meals: B / L / D

We set off after breakfast along undulating dirt trails and farming tracks that curve around terraced hillsides. The route passes near the concrete embankment of Dhap Dam, constructed to regulate the flow of the Bagmati River, before continuing through quiet rural hamlets.

The final section involves a gradual uphill stretch leading onto the main ridge of Nagarkot. We check into our guesthouse and spend the afternoon resting while observing the changing light across the valley.

Day 3

Nagarkot Sunrise, Bhaktapur Sightseeing, and Drive to Kathmandu

Meals: B

We rise before dawn to catch the morning light on the Himalayan horizon from the Nagarkot viewpoint. Following breakfast, we descend by vehicle towards the Kathmandu Valley, stopping to explore the medieval brick courtyards and pagoda temples of Bhaktapur Durbar Square.

Our team provides a guided walking tour of the UNESCO World Heritage site to observe traditional Newari woodcarving and pottery before our final afternoon transfer back to Kathmandu.

Good to know

Altitude & acclimatisation

Our maximum altitude on this trek reaches 2,300 m at Chisapani. Because we stay well below altitudes associated with acute mountain sickness, no special acclimatisation schedule is required, making this an ideal introduction to trekking in Nepal.

Accommodation & meals

We accommodate you in twin-share teahouses and basic mountain lodges along the route. Meals are prepared fresh on-site, featuring standard dal bhat, noodle dishes, and momos, complemented by hot tea and seasonal fruits provided by our team.

Fitness expectations

While classified as an easy trek, you will encounter sustained stone staircases on the first day and rolling hills on the second. A basic level of cardiovascular fitness and comfort walking 4 to 6 hours per day on uneven terrain is sufficient.

Responsible travel

We adhere to leave-no-trace principles across protected watersheds and local communities. Our staff are locally hired, insured, and paid fair wages in compliance with industry standards.
