Trip overview

We operate our whitewater trips on the Bhote Koshi River, known as one of the steepest and most challenging commercially rafted rivers in Nepal. Fed by glacial sources from Tibet, the river drops rapidly through narrow gorges, creating continuous class IV to V rapids that demand active paddling and precise teamwork. Our professional rafting guides and safety kayakers accompany every departure to ensure proper instruction and on-water management.

This trip suits travelers with a taste for fast-paced action and those who want a high-energy river experience within reach of Kathmandu. As we navigate the continuous drops and powerful hydraulics, we pass through remote canyons, terraced hillsides, and hanging waterfalls. The journey combines technical river running with views of the surrounding green valleys.

Safety remains our highest priority on the water. Before pushing off from the Lomosangu Dam, our team conducts a comprehensive safety briefing covering paddling commands, defensive swimming positions, and rapid rescue protocols. We provide all necessary safety equipment, including high-grade helmets and personal flotation devices, alongside professional safety kayakers who track every raft through the technical sections.

Before you go

Good to know

River conditions & safety

The Bhote Koshi is a steep volume river with continuous rapids that require active participation and swimming ability. Our guides carry comprehensive first aid kits and throw bags on every trip.

All participants must wear the provided helmet and personal flotation device at all times while on the water.

Best seasons for rafting

We operate our Bhote Koshi trips during two distinct seasonal windows: spring (March to May) and autumn through early winter (September to December). During these months, water levels driven by snowmelt and seasonal weather remain optimal for commercial rafting.

Monsoon rains in July and August create high, unpredictable water volumes that make the river unsafe for standard rafting operations.

What to bring on the river

We recommend wearing quick-drying synthetic clothing, swimwear, and secure footwear such as river sandals or old sneakers that stay firmly on your feet. Cotton clothing is discouraged as it retains water and causes rapid cooling.

Bring a complete change of dry clothes and a towel to leave in the support vehicle for after the rafting leg.

Previous experience requirements

While prior whitewater experience is not strictly required for the Bhote Koshi, participants must be comfortable swimming in moving water and following rapid verbal commands from the guide.

We advise those with a history of severe cardiovascular or mobility issues to consult a physician before booking this high-energy trip.
