We explore the protected wilderness of Bardia National Park on a four-day jungle safari, tracking wildlife in the Terai region.

At a glance

Trip overview

We offer a focused wildlife exploration into Bardia National Park, situated in Nepal's remote western Terai region. Spanning nearly 970 square kilometres (374 square miles) of sal forest, grasslands, and riverine jungle along the Karnali and Babai river systems, this protected area holds some of the densest wild habitats in the Indian subcontinent. Our four-day itinerary is designed for travellers seeking a genuine immersion into lowland ecosystems without the heavy footfall found in other reserves.

The journey suits wildlife enthusiasts, bird watchers, and those interested in the indigenous culture of the Tharu community. We combine early morning jeep safaris, deep jungle walks, and visits to conservation breeding centres with community museum tours. Throughout the stay, our experienced nature guides lead tracking efforts through habitats shared by wild elephants, swamp deer, marsh muggers, and the endangered Bengal tiger.

Logistically, the tour involves a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj followed by a surface transfer to the park boundary. Accommodation is provided in comfortable forest lodges on a full-board basis, allowing us to maintain an early pace suited to wildlife viewing patterns. Physical demands are low to moderate, consisting primarily of gentle walking tracks and vehicle-based safaris in sub-tropical lowland conditions.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Kathmandu to Bardia via Nepalgunj

Meals: B

We board an early morning flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, heading west over river networks and low hills for approximately 50 minutes. Upon touching down, we meet our ground transport for the 100 km drive north toward Bardia National Park, taking roughly two and a half hours. After checking into our lodge, our lead guide outlines the wildlife protocols and safety briefings for the days ahead. In the late afternoon, we stretch our legs with a walk through a nearby Tharu village to observe traditional construction methods and local daily life.

Day 2

Jeep Safari and Wildlife Tracking in Bardia

Meals: B / L / D

Following breakfast, we board our safari vehicle to penetrate deeper into the protected forest zones bordered by the Karnali and Babai rivers. Our route brings us past natural waterholes and observation towers constructed to monitor mammal movements, including wild elephants, swamp deer, and rhinos. We also visit the local crocodile breeding centre and the Tharu Museum to study regional artifacts and conservation efforts. Our experienced nature guide assists in reading fresh tracks on the forest floor throughout the day.

Day 3

Early Morning Bird Watching and Jungle Walk

Meals: B / L / D

We set out into the reserve at dawn when avian activity peaks along the riverbanks and canopy edges. Our team leads a quiet foot excursion through dense undergrowth to spot resident and migratory bird species inhabiting the park. The afternoon offers additional opportunities for jeep reconnaissance or quiet observation from designated wildlife hides. We return to the lodge before dusk to review our sightings and prepare for departure.

Day 4

Drive to Nepalgunj and Fly to Kathmandu

Meals: B

After an early breakfast at the lodge, we check out and take our private vehicle back down to Nepalgunj airport. We board the afternoon return flight to Kathmandu, catching final views of the mid-Western landscape from the cabin window. Upon landing at Kathmandu, our support staff meets us for the final transfer to our city accommodation.

Before you go

Good to know

Wildlife viewing expectations

We operate in a completely wild habitat where animal sightings cannot be guaranteed. Bengal tigers, wild elephants, and rhinos roam freely across expansive forests, meaning patience and quiet observation are essential during our safaris.

Our guides employ traditional tracking methods and maintain strict safety distances from all large mammals. We ask all participants to follow guide instructions implicitly whenever wildlife is encountered on foot or from vehicles.

Best time to visit

We schedule our Bardia safaris between January and May, as well as September through December, to avoid peak monsoon rains. During these drier months, vegetation thaws or thins appropriately, and animals frequent water sources more predictably.

Temperatures in the Terai lowland can be warm during midday and cool after sunset. We recommend packing lightweight cotton layers alongside a fleece or windproof jacket for morning game drives.

Health and insect precautions

The Terai region is a sub-tropical lowland zone where mosquitoes and other insects are active year-round. We advise carrying effective insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long sleeves during evening hours, and consulting a travel doctor regarding malaria prophylaxis before departure.

Clothing and gear etiquette

We strongly recommend wearing neutral-coloured clothing such as khaki, olive, or brown during jungle walks to avoid startling wildlife. Bright colours and strong perfumes should be left behind in Kathmandu.
