Trip overview
We have designed this 18-day expedition to combine the classic trail into the Annapurna Sanctuary with a beginner-friendly peak climbing objective. Tharpu Chuli, also known historically as Tent Peak due to its geometry, rises to 5653 m and offers climbers a rewarding introduction to Himalayan mountaineering without extreme technical difficulties. Our route leads us past terraced farmlands, through dense rhododendron forests, and up the glacial trough of the Modi Khola valley.
The journey begins with cultural exploration in Kathmandu before we fly to Pokhara and head into the hills via Ghorepani and Poon Hill. We trek deep into the sanctuary past Chhomrong, Dovan, and Deurali, flanked by towering rock faces and hanging glaciers. After establishing our routines at Annapurna Base Camp, we move to the high camp of Tharpu Chuli to prepare for our summit attempt. The climb requires basic crampon and rope work, supervised closely by our certified climbing sherpas.
This itinerary suits hikers with solid physical fitness who wish to step beyond standard trekking and experience their first Himalayan summit. We manage our ascent gradually, allowing adequate time for physiological acclimatisation as we approach the higher camps. Along the trail, we experience the hospitality of Gurung and Magar communities, sharing teahouses and learning about local mountain life before returning via the natural hot springs of Jhinu Danda.

Altitude & Acclimatisation
We reach a maximum elevation of 5653 m at the summit of Tharpu Chuli. Our itinerary builds in gradual elevation gains and rest opportunities to help your body adjust to decreasing oxygen levels.
Our guides carry pulse oximeters and monitor daily health indicators. If symptoms of acute mountain sickness appear, our team is trained to manage descents immediately.
Climbing Experience
Tharpu Chuli is classified as a non-technical peak, making it suitable for motivated beginners with solid physical fitness. However, basic mountaineering skills like walking in crampons and using fixed ropes are required.
Our climbing sherpas conduct a training session at base camp before the summit attempt to ensure all participants are comfortable with the technical gear.
Accommodation & Facilities
During the trekking phases, we stay in local teahouses offering twin-share rooms with basic wooden beds and foam mattresses. Above base camp, we transition to tented camping managed by our expedition crew.
Hot showers and device charging facilities are available in most lower teahouses for a small local fee, but become scarce or unavailable at higher altitudes.
Insurance Requirements
All participants must hold comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and mountaineering up to 6000 m, including emergency helicopter evacuation.
Please carry a physical copy of your insurance policy and emergency contact details with you throughout the trek.

Frequently asked questions
Is Tharpu Chuli climbing suitable for absolute beginners?
Yes, Tharpu Chuli is considered a less-technical trekking peak. While prior mountaineering experience is not strictly required, you must possess strong cardiovascular fitness, hiking stamina, and a willingness to learn basic rope and crampon techniques.
What kind of physical preparation should I do before the trip?
We recommend starting cardiovascular training at least three to four months prior to departure. Focus on running, cycling, stair climbing, and weighted day hikes to build leg strength and stamina.
How are meals handled during the camping portion?
Our kitchen crew prepares fresh, nutritious meals at base camp and high camp, maintaining high hygiene standards to ensure safe nutrition at altitude.
What is the weight limit for luggage carried by porters?
Porters carry expedition duffel bags with a strict weight limit of 10 kg per trekker. You will carry a daypack containing your personal items, water, and extra layers.
What happens if weather conditions prevent the summit attempt?
Our lead guide makes safety decisions based on weather and mountain conditions. We include buffer days in our schedule, but safety always takes precedence over reaching the summit.
Do I need to bring my own technical climbing gear?
We provide group gear like ropes and snow bars. Personal items such as harness, ice axe, mountaineering boots, and crampons can be rented or purchased in Kathmandu if you do not own them.
