Frequently asked questions about trekking in India

Direct guidance from our Kathmandu and regional operations desk.

Do I need a visa in advance to trek in India?

Yes, most foreign nationals must secure an electronic Travel Authorization or tourist visa online before departure. Visa on arrival is restricted to specific nationalities and ports of entry. We recommend applying for a 60-day e-visa at least three weeks prior to your arrival in Delhi.

What special permits are required for trekking in the Indian Himalayas?

Permit requirements vary significantly by region. Restricted Area Permits (RAP) are mandatory for border districts in Ladakh, Sikkim, and parts of Himachal Pradesh, while Uttarakhand requires inner line permits for higher valleys. Our team processes all necessary state permits and forest clearances as part of your expedition package.

When is the best season for trekking in the Indian Himalayas?

The primary trekking windows are from March to May for spring blooms and stable lower-altitude weather, and from September to November for clear mountain views following the monsoon. For rain-shadow regions like Ladakh and Zanskar, July and August offer the optimal summer conditions.

How do we handle altitude sickness on high-altitude treks in India?

Our routes in Ladakh, Himachal, and Uttarakhand frequently exceed 4,000 to 5,000 metres. We design all itineraries with gradual ascent profiles, built-in acclimatization days, and carry comprehensive medical kits with pulse oximeters and portable hyperbaric bags. Our lead guides are certified in wilderness first aid and monitor daily vitals.

What currency should I bring and are ATMs widely available?

The Indian Rupee (INR) is the sole legal tender, and foreign exchange is strictly regulated. While major cities and lower valley hubs like Leh or Manali have numerous ATMs, cash becomes scarce and unreliable once you ascend above 2,500 metres. We advise withdrawing sufficient cash in Delhi or Chandigarh before heading to the mountains.

How is mobile connectivity and internet access in the Indian mountains?

Mobile networks such as Jio and Airtel function reasonably well in lower valleys and towns. However, in regions like Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, prepaid SIM cards purchased outside the state do not work due to local security regulations. Satellite communication devices are managed directly by our expedition leads for safety.
